Help me if you can.
It's just that this...
Is not the way I'm wired
So could you please
Help me understand why...
You've given in to all these
Reckless dark desires

You're--
Lying to yourself again.
Suicidal imbecile.
Think about it.
Put it on the fault line.
What'll it take to get it through to you, precious?
I'm over this.
Why do you want to throw it away like this?
Such a mess.
Why would I want to watch you...

Disconnect and self destruct one bullet at a time
What's your rush now? Everyone will have his day to die.

A peaceful place, without war or sin-- that is how the world was when it began. Atlantis was the heart of the planet. It was where everyone gathered, and where Elementals wandered. They were motes of energy, incapable of independent thought, radiating the emotions of those around them. Atlantis always felt like a happy place due to them.

One day, the Angels came. They had traveled through the Ether aimlessly and stumbled upon the planet. Admiring the tranquility that reigned, they settled in Atlantis, giving gifts to its inhabitants. Their gifts, however, brought forth the downfall of the civilization. Jealousy came into existence, Sadness and Anger hot on its heels. Soon Atlanteans were fighting amongst each other for any number of reasons.

The King had asked the Angels to leave, as they did not seem to show any remorse about the discord they had spread, and were only intent on causing more. They had refused; over time they had grown ambitious, and wanted the planet for themselves.

The War began.

Technology was quite advanced; the Angels were, however, very powerful magicians. They had also persuaded many important figures of the Kingdom to assist them. The King was at a disadvantage, but he refused to give in. At his command, those fighting on his side sought different ways to attack.

Alchemists had devised a way to create a living "weapon" that could not be destroyed, could not feel pain, and whose mere touch would kill. They gathered Elementals and subjected them through various procedures, merging and transforming them into something else entirely. The result was just as they had expected it to be... but they made one "mistake". Their "weapon" had evolved sufficiently to think for itself-- and it did not want to fight.

They had no way of coercing the creature to battle the Angels, and so they confined it in an underground chamber and sealed it with magic. Their later experiments were more successful, however they ran out of Elementals, and the Angels devised a way to incapacitate their creatures.

The War had raged on for years.

In the end, the Angels won. They destroyed what remained and redesigned the planet as they liked. Atlantis had too strong a magical protection to be obliterated, and so they sunk it to the bottom of the ocean. The Leviathan, a massive, serpentine monstrosity that the desperate King and his Alchemists had created, lurked the depths, protecting its home.

. . .

Ten thousand years had passed since the War ended. The Angels became Seraphim, the Gods of this planet called Earth. The Seal that had kept Altanis in place had long since been obliterated. He was content with roaming the darkness quietly, observing, harnessing energy and emotions like an object would collect dust. He had become more powerful than the Gods, and his existence had expanded to the point that he was a part of Reality itself.
Given his origins, his being attracted and accumulated power. After ten thousand years, he was powerful enough to kill the Gods. They could do nothing against him-- but they had little to fear from him, either. Altanis is content to simply observe the world. Their follies amused him, and their creations-- Humans especially-- were fun to toy with.

He's the kind of guy who sits back and watches things unfold. Sometimes he'd step in and cause a bit of chaos when things got boring. He's not the one who sets plans into motion (not always), but he knows all and sees all.

He was not created with the ability to feel "complex" emotions. Though he cherishes his memories of Atlantis, and resents the Leviathan for being a relic of the War-- one that the King did not cast away-- he would never personally experience love or hate.

In the living creatures he had created, however, he sometimes tried to incorporate them. Thus far he had been unsuccessful, but he didn't mind. Their "imperfection" rarely impacted on the purpose of their existence, and they made for entertaining twists.

Xeiro is one of his creations, incorporating two feelings that went hand in hand: Love and Despair. Altanis considers him one of his better projects and keeps a close eye on him.
