Her whistling also drew in a great many critters, who would listen while enjoying the shade provided by the plants. Many would doze off, made drowsy by the fragrances surrounding them.
Then, one day it ended. No matter how she tried, her plants became wilted and shrivelled, their leaves and flowers taking on an ugly brownish twinge. The animals that had frequented the area disappeared. No matter how desperately she sang, her garden was gone.
She tried to plant more seeds, they died. She tried to plant a sapling, it wouldn't take root.
This wasn't natural. She needed to figure out what was causing the devastation.
So she watched. She watched the garden day and night. She had almost given up when, as midnight rolled around on the third night, a squirrel crept into the garden. It began to dig. Eventually, it found what it was looking for.
It was a handful of the new seeds she had planted. The squirrel stared at them intently, and the seeds glowed white for a moment before fading and turning to dust in its paws. As the dust fell, the same eerie glow surrounded the remainder of the plants in the garden, momentarily illuminating Sequoia. She flinched.
Seeing the movement, the squirrel turned. She realised that this was no squirrel. It had claws. It had red eyes. It had a mouth full of pointy teeth that she noticed as it smiled at her.
There was nothing she could do. She was trapped. In a split second she made the choice to defend what was hers. She let out a piercing whistle, and attacked. She pecked and dodged and swooped.
It was a losing battle. The creature had sharp claws and clearly was used to fighting. But as she fought, she noticed something.
Whenever she whistled, either from frustration or as a distraction, it seemed to become disoriented. It seemed she had little hope left, so she began to sing.
The creature covered its ears and screeched. It was a horrible sound but Sequoia continued singing. It began clawing the air, trying to find her, apparently unable to see her.
She sang for a very long time. Eventually, the squirrel seemed to tire. It fell to the ground.
Sequoia, still whistling, moved close to it. Seeing no apparent signs of life, she prodded the body. It disintegrated.
She collapsed from exhaustion. She had won. The sun was beginning to rise, and as it did, she heard music. All around her was bird song. Soon, she began to see the birds hopping out of the undergrowth and down from hidden tree branches. Birds of all shapes and colours surrounded her.
She began to whistle with them, her tune ragged at first but gaining strength. And the garden began to change. Slowly the brown tinge began to fade. Blossoms appeared on branches and stems. Withered flowers began to plump up again.
And then it was over. The choir of birds was gone. In their place were her animal friends.
She got to work. Her garden was back.
