My Story...
As a child, Zoro was strong enough to defeat most adults, but could not defeat Kuina, the Dojo master's daughter. After several attempts to beat her (which he never won) Zoro challenged her to a private match where they would use real swords. Although he had improved tremendously since their first match, he lost. After the match he told Kuina his dream of being the world's greatest swordsman. Hearing this, Kuina told him that she shared the same dream but her father had told her that girls could never be true sword masters, and that her fighting potential would decrease as she got older. Zoro, annoyed by her hopeless attitude, told her that one day he would beat her because he was more skilled, not because she was a girl. The two then made a promise. A promise that either of them must become the world's best swordsman.
The next day, Kuina fell down the stairs of her dojo (to get a sharpening stone for her sword) and died. Realizing that she would never have the chance to fulfill her dream, Zoro asked his sensei, Koshiro (Kuina father), for her sword, the legendary Wado Ichimonji, and started working to master Santoryu, or the three sword style, holding his own two swords in each hand, and Kuina's clenched between his teeth
Zoro Eventually learned of Dracule Mihawk (Hawk-eye), who currently holds the title of the Greatest Swordsman in the world. He set off to sea, searching for him to challenge him to a duel. However, he lost his way, and could not find his way back home (given his awful sense of direction). In order to survive on his own, he took on bounties to pay for food, sword repair, and other vital things to keep him alive on his journey. He quickly got a reputation as a "Pirate Hunter" in East Blue and even in Grand Line. He was even considered as the greatest swordsman in the East Blue, after which he met the two bounty hunters, Johnny and Yosaku which he teamed up with.
Due to his reputation as a bounty hunter, Zoro was offered a position as a numbered agent within Baroque Works. He said he would accept only if they would make him the lead the organization (which they refused). He then killed Mr. 7, the number agent who offered him the position, out of defense.
During his journey, Zoro arrived in Shells Town where Helmeppo, the spoiled son of Marine captain Axe-Hand Morgan, releases his pet wolf in town. It tried to attack a girl named Rika, but Zoro saved her by killing it. For this, Helmeppo told Zoro that he would have to be tied to a pole for a month or he would kill Rika and her mother. Zoro accepted.
A few days before Zoro was supposed to be freed, two boys named Coby and Luffy arrived in town. Coby had the intention of joining the Marines and Luffy wanted to invite Zoro to be his first crewmember. They eventually arrived where Zoro was being held, just in time to see Rika trying to feed him some rice balls, only to be thrown out (literally) by Helmeppo. After they left, Luffy asked Zoro to join his crew but he refused. He then asked Luffy to feed him the dirtied rice balls and thank Rika for him, thus revealing his kindness. Later, Rika explained to Luffy and Coby the reason for Zoro's capture, which only strengthens Luffy's decision to have him as his crewmember. When Helmeppo states that he would execute Zoro the next day, Luffy punches him out of anger for breaking his promise, which sends Helmeppo crying to his father, seeking revenge.
With the promise of retreiving Zoro swords if he'd join his crew, Luffy went to the Marine Base. Luffy caught Helmeppo and forced him to lead him to where where Zoro's swords were. Meanwhile, Coby explained to Zoro what Helmeppo was planning to do while trying to untie him. Luffy jumped down just in time to save them from the sniper unit. Refusing to die, Zoro accepted Luffy's invitation and revealing his unique fighting style and his dream of becoming the world's best swordsman, which Luffy supports, believing that the future King of the Pirates should have the best crew. Luffy fought with Morgan. However, when Helmeppo threatened to shoot Coby, Luffy knocked him out while Zoro defeated Morgan. The Marines, seeing their tyrant leader was defeated, rejoiced and allowed Luffy and Zoro to leave. However, since they were pirates, the Marines had them leave the island but promised not to report them to headquarters. As they were leaving, Commander Ripper asked Coby about his past. To help Coby hide the fact he was once a pirate, Luffy provoked him into starting a fight between them. Zoro stopped the fight before it got too out of hand, but it was enough for Coby to build up the courage to ask Ripper if he could join the Marines. Ripper granted permission. While leaving, Luffy and Zoro were saluted by Coby and the Marines for saving the town. Luffy and Zoro then sailed on where there will be more adventures to come.
