The tear in the teddy's ear was only small and yet somehow that made the lady feel sadder. As she stitched the ear back together, she started to massage the bear's tummy to move its stuffing back into place. Such a waste of such a beautiful toy.

The seamstress sat the teddy upright next to the one-eyed dog plushie and the fourth leg of the three legged cat plushie and smiled as he leaned sideways, listening to the dog plushie's sad tale of loss.

She picked up the dog and gently removed the one good eye, picking up a matching pair from her box of tools, stitching swiftly so that the dog could see again. She laughed at the goofy look the dog had and flicked the black dot of its eye so it dropped to the bottom.

The dog sat happily, looking ready to wag his tail as she picked up the cat, re-stuffing the fourth leg and stitching it back into place. She picked the three toys up and smiled as she put them into her bag, leaving their heads poking out from the top as she put on her coat and walked outside into the crisp morning air.

It didn't take long to get to where she needed to be and she knocked softly on the big oak door, listening for the familiar noises from inside. The patter of little feet, the high pitched squeals, the laughter echoed in the hallway on the other side of the door and then the door creaked open.

The owner of the orphanage stood before her and smiled as the seamstress entered the hallway, crouching down intuitively as the children ran into her outstretched arms to hug her. Every child tried to talk to her at the same time and she laughed as she tried to understand the happy jabbering.

She stood up and carefully opened her bag as all the children stood, talking in hushed whispers. First, she took out the dog and held him up.

Xio!" one of the smallest girls, perhaps four years old, reached up towards the dog. The seamstress smiled and, as was the custom in the orphanage, handed the toy to the child who had named it.

The same happened with Bruce the bear and Tippy the cat and then the rest of the children gave her a hug and told her they hoped she would come back soon.

As the lady reached the end of the driveway she looked back, smiling sadly. Mis-fit unwanted toys for the mis-fit unwanted children of the orphanage seemed so unfair. But for that hour every few days, those children and those toys were the most important things in the world.
