Zick was always the smartest of the brothers. He kept analyzing the situations sensibly no matter what happened. Unlike his big brother Zaxy, he even believed that their parents must have had a good reason to leave them alone. While Zaxy became the one who had to do all the dirty work in order to keep the three of them alive, Zick spent the most time looking after their little brother Zelta. For his comfort, Zelta didn't really understand the state they were in, and Zick was able to pretend that they were just on an exciting adventure while their parents were away.

Building up an illusion was painful, especially as he knew that Zaxy was fighting for his life only to bring food for them. In order to get them better chance of survival, Zick decided to learn to read. It was an incredibly difficult mission since he had to do everything by himself and the most material he could find was old newspapers from trash cans. It took a long time, but still, Zick was dedicated enough to succeed. His skills came in great use for the brothers, because they finally got to know what happened around them. At the same time Zaxy had been training with his new friend Max who also began to help the brothers by donating some of his extra food and occasionally even buying books for Zick. It felt like things were going to settle down. Zick could follow how Zelta grew up to be a happy and playful boy who was interested in everything and held no grudge against anyone. Zick was content to see he had been able to save his little brother from their suffering.

No matter how much of a sunshine Zelta was, raising him isolated from the cruelty of the world was a fatal mistake. Since Zelta didn't comprehend the dangers they faced, he wasn't able to be afraid of them as he should. Eventually the day of horror arrived. The brothers happened to encounter a witch, and the naive Zelta blurted a comment he should never have let out of his mouth. The witch became furious and cast a powerful curse upon Zelta. There was no way they could have done anything to protect him. The results were devastating: Zelta turned to the very opposite of himself: an emotionless, uninterested and violent beast that was unable to speak. Zaxy blamed himself for failing to defend his brother and fell in depression, so Zick and Max were the only ones capable of taking care of Zaxy's and Zick's distorted little brother.

Despite the obvious hopelessness, Zick refused to fall in despair. He made clear that he would study witchcraft until he would find a spell that could negate Zelta's curse. Zaxy laughed at him. He was too deep in darkness to believe in anything but revenge. Zick's or Max's persuasion didn't work. Zaxy left, God knows where. However, Zick decided to focus on healing Zelta. He even applied to Seedlings to get fair money and a chance to make research on the herbs that grew there. Luckily his intelligence and determination were appreciated, and he got the job, and was soon promoted to a position of a horticulturist. After that Zick could afford the expensive books about magic and potion brewing as well as paying rent for occupying Max's cellar as his laboratory. He got into mastering the using of Dark Matter, since it's the most common magical substance in Darkside. Zick's first achievement was to bring a rock alive as a Dark Matter creature. Zick gave the rock name James and made him his assistant.

Regardless of numerous drawbacks, Zick had no intention of giving up.
