The coffee shop had a reputation for weird. It wasn’t just the open mic night - that was truly weird - but it was something about the patrons, and the coffee, and the one barista with the gorgeous blue eyes. The patrons were mostly turtleneck-wearing beatniks who missed the memo that the sixties died some time in 1996 with the advent of personal computers for the home and internet for anyone. And cellphones. But still, they carried portable typewriters and cigarettes, commenting occasionally that the surgeon general’s warning was a sorry attempt by the man to keep them down. Each one of the regulars had a table that was theirs and theirs alone. It made the coffee shop a lonely and uncomfortable place to be for any outsider.

But Fandor didn’t mind.

He liked the wide berth the suspicious regulars gave him, as well as their dark, mistrustful looks. As far as they knew, he was one of the man’s spies. Spies. Please. They bordered on paranoid, these people, and the coffee stank of it. It tasted like burning and sweat, and it really was the most awful cup of coffee he’d ever had. But it was all worth it for the blue-eyed barista. Her eyes were a color of cobalt that didn’t exist in nature, a brilliant blue, bright and clear and deep. They seemed to shine in her pale face, made all the brighter by her stiff, jet black hair. Either her dye or her straightener had fried her hair, but either way, it made her beautiful.

The regulars only saw her disdainful scowl and counted her among their number, but Fandor could see the faint glow around her. There could be no doubt that, like him, she was an angel. He had hoped she would notice. He always hoped they’d notice, but no one ever did. It was the darkness in him; he knew that. It was the same darkness that made him hate her for not seeing that he was like her. It was the same darkness that he knew was going to make him follow her home and take the halo off her dresser while she slept.

He had first seen her in a shop at the kitschy train station on the east side of town. He had followed her back to the coffee shop, and he had been coming back ever since, hoping she’d notice. Since he’d been coming, he’d also been trailing her home, careful not to be seen. He watched her take off her halo every night and leave it on her dresser. That’s where he’d take it from tonight.

On the one hand, he didn’t want to leave her without it, but on the other, he didn’t care how much she missed it. She wouldn’t acknowledge him, so she deserved it. Once her shift was over, he’d follow her home, and then, angel or not, he was going to take her halo. They never saw him for what he was, so he’d take their ability to see. It was only fair. And even though he knew it wasn’t really, it made his conscience feel a little better. Every time he gave into his darkness, he made it worse, he made the light a little smaller, but right now, he didn’t care how guilty he felt. He could feel guilty in the morning.
