How long have I been on this island?I feel as though it has been millenia...

Well, since you are here, let me tell you a story.

My name was Akatruo the Fabulous, and I was once a beautiful prince. My greatest joy was not politics, nor sport, nor love. Instead, I engaged in the most worthwhile of occupations: amassing fabulous riches. Gold, gems, and rare artifacts all were added to my collection. For what is there in life that cannot be accomplished with wealth? It is through wealth that we influence our advisors, our judges, and our lovers.

In my search for treasures I travelled the globe, and on my travels I heard the tale of a rare and beautiful gem: The Blood Pearl. A treasure beyond any other on earth, the stories told. A treasure so fine, a man could waste away in long admiration of its beauty. In my search for this gem I landed on this isle where you find me today. This God-forsaken land, with its barren strands and rocky soil, is said to be its home.

When first I found myself on this isle, I tempted the villagers with promises of gems and jewels if they would find me this Pearl, but none was successful. For months and months I ordered them to dive and dive to search the waters for my treasure. When they came to me with empty hands, they left with empty hands.

After seven months of waiting for my pearl to be found, while waiting on the shore and overseeing the laborers who lusted for my wealth, there came to me an old lady, the Witch of the Isle.

"Prince Akatruo," she said to me, "The greatest blessing of this land is its people. For months and months you have offered false promises to the youths of this isle, tempting them away from their families and friends. In their search for your Pearl, they have forgotten themselves, and are working themselves to exhaustion and death. I, therefore, offer you a choice:

Either you give the riches you promised to my people and leave this land, or stay. But be warned. if you stay, I consign to you the same fate you have offered to my people. From here on out, you will spend eternity diving and diving for a treasure you will never find."

Of course I had no intention of letting the greedy witch get her hands on my treasure. I told her that I would stay, and she should be on her way. It was then that her curse took effect, and I transformed on the spot into this hideous form you see today. And all my precious treasure? She transformed it into nothing but a pile of seashells. She then told me that I had one option if I ever wanted to escape from this form. I can escape only if I ever repent for my avarice, and give my seashells away to the isle's newest, youngest generation: the children who play here on the seaside.

But do not think I will cave to the blackmail of the greedy witch! No, my precious shells will never leave my side. I know she only wants them for herself. Instead I will guard my pile of shells here on the shore, seaching and searching and searching eternally for the Blood Pearl, that most precious of all treasures..
