♫ Linda Smith - I So Liked Spring

The sun was setting on another warm evening. The laundry was brought in, table cleared, kettle on. There was nothing new to read, so she sat there in silence as the water steamed. It doesn't rain here as much anymore, she thought to herself, looking out at the dry gully that ran alongside the house. It always used to rain on her birthday, but hadn't once this month. She sighed, closing her eyes.

The last time it rained...

She could clearly see the outline of his face, his cheeks and jaw traced into her fingers and thumb. There was a cool, wet breeze in the garden, and flowers were nodding over, sopping with dew. They sat at the iron lattice table, looking out from under the solemn beech tree with their tea beside them. She fumbled the cup she was holding in bringing it to her face, and it fell and hit the stone paver, breaking the handle off. "I'll get it", as he laughed it off and set it back up on the table. It was easier to be graceless then, as it was always in turn used as a favor; a bid of affection. Days were thoughtlessly easy, floating by the same as the next. How conscious you become, she thought, once something is gone.

A pang in her chest, or maybe it was her gut. She recollected the scent of the wet garden, the petrichor and geosmin from the bare earth under tree. It was almost as if it was just a dream... his features didn't line up how they were supposed to anymore. Did he really look like that? or--

"Eeeeee!"

The kettle sputtered and whistled. She got up to turn the flame off, and took it to the counter. The two knobs of the cracked cup were still rough, but it was not wholly broken. She poured the water.

I wonder if he still looks the same...
