Chitauri was not always so wealthy, in fact he was born into a life quite the opposite. Despite his impoverished childhood, it was not without it's blessings. At a young age, without a home and with a hungry stomach, Chitauri was offered a job by a wealthy sorcerer named Pravum. Why the powerful man had chosen him, with his ragged and disheveled appearance, Chitauri did not know. He enjoyed his simple work, cleaning the library and fetching scrolls the sorcerer needed for his studies. Over the years, he could not help but to vicariously learn simple alchemy and spell casting. Although he never practiced what he watched himself, Pravum promoted him from servant to assistant, giving him substantially more pay. During these years, Chitauri found love for a beautiful maiden, another servant of the sorcerer named Anseris. Shortly before their marriage, however, the sorceress assigned a task to Chitauri which would forever change his life.
"Travel to the Omen Islands; and head North. Halfway to the Sacred Lands is a miniscule island, if my studies prove correct. Fetch the chest there, but no matter what; do not open it. Deliver it to me immediately." Chitauri had much to be thankful for, as he now had enough savings to provide a comfortable life for him and his bride. Thus, Chitauri set forward, aboard a ship run by a mercenary crew, well paid for by the sorcerer.
Many days of traveling, and the island came into view, just as Pravum had foretold. As the boat pulled up, several mercenaries jumped into the shallows, running ashore, eager to see if the sorcerer's stories were true. They spent much time searching the small island, but could not find a single worthy item.
Chitauri descended the ship patiently. The moment his foot touched the sand of the beach, something changed.
The ocean seemed to silence, a chill ran down his spine, and the wind seemed to whisper to him. Almost in a daze, he followed the whispers until he came upon a sandy mound.
Come now, so close. So close to what you will love.
Chitauri was encouraged by the ethereal voice, and immediately dug into the sand. His heart froze when his claws tapped against the chest.
Open me.
Chitauri remembered the sorcerer's commands, and despite an inner calling, avoided opening the chest. He picked it up and returned to the ship.
The mercenaries gathered around, some with malicious greed in their eyes. Their leader, however, reminded them of their duties, and the rest of their pay which awaited them upon return of the chest.
It only took a day aboard the boat for the crew to begin quarreling. After a particularly dangerous fight, one of them begged of Chitauri, "Chitauri, please. Let us open it so we at least know if there is anything of value for us in there."
Chitauri, though brave, was not brave before the group of eager, greedy eyes. Surely Pravum would understand if he opened it for his own safety.
Yes, open me. I'll show you what you'll love.
Chitauri opened the treasure chest... and found it empty. With anger and disappointment coursing through the ranks, Chitauri himself felt something different. The chest was not empty after all, was it? For Chitauri held a strange sense of satisfaction. He had received something, though what he could not place.
Chitauri arrived home without further incident, and quickly returned to Pravum. Chitauri presented the chest. Pravum immediately glared at him, his disapproval clear upon his expression. Chitauri attempted to defend himself, "The merceneries would have torn me apart to see what was inside..." Pravum shook his head, turning away. "It would have been preferable, for your sake. Go now, you are no longer needed in my service." Chitauri was taken aback, an emotional flame of anger flickering within his chest. "I did as you asked, I found the island, I retrieved the chest." Pravum refused to look towards him again, and when he spoke his voice was foreboding. "You did not do as I commanded. You opened the artifact, thus releasing the demon inside. I cannot allow you to remain. You may take Anseris and any of your belongings with you. Now begone."
Confused and angry, Chitauri sought out his beloved. An immediate relief overtook him when he saw his beauty, and she ran up to him joyously. A voice wavered in his mind, a familiar voice.
I will show you what you will love.
Anseris embraced him, though her grasp faltered quickly. "Chitauri...what..." Golden feathers began to sprout from her arms, and her stature seemed to crumble in on itself. Chitauri stumbled back in shocked horror. Moments later, instead of his beloved, a golden goose stood before him. Chitauri, collapsed, crying over the oblivious creature.
This is what you love, now. Forever.
Chitauri, if he finds himself loving anything or anyone, discovers that they turn into a golden object before him. Decades of this torment, of losing anything that he began to enjoy, left him with a dark and hateful heart. For, if he loves anything, he dooms them. He has a particular hatred for anyone magically inclined, and often takes out his years of agony out on them. His only happiness now are the treasures before him; particularly a quiet, golden goose.
