I was born in this harbour, the ocean runs like blood in my veins and I know every square inch of this place like the backs of my wings. I'm the youngest of the Star Fleet; the master switcher, and I'm Captain Star's favourite! ...Well, no. No, that's a lie. I ain't his favourite...not since my accident with the USS Michigan. Not since all the headaches and heartaches I've had trying to be the leader I know I can be if someone would just give me half a chance to prove it. Yeah, I'm being stubborn, call it whatever you like, mate. But when you've been kicked whilst you were down so many times by adults that should know better, stubbornness becomes something you take pride in! I'm proud as punch to be the royal pain in their tails - at least that earns me a few stripes in the face of it all. I prefer hard work to earn the stripes I have.
I work my hardest all day, every day, without question, without fail. I've never been late to the early morning briefing, to a delivery, to a job on the fartherest reach of this port or to home at the end of the day. My track record is stellar, and I like to keep it that way. If I'm given a task, I do it with all of my ability and speed. And I'm proud to have the best track record of all of Captain Star's team. ...s'just no one ever notices or appreciates that fact. Oh, my mates used to, they used to until my accident in my first few days of being allowed to help on prioritised tasks that only the adults ever did. -Hercules- had to save me that time, and I ended up in so much trouble from the Captain. He, and the others, let me have it. I was attacked for my size, my stupidity and the fact I hadn't listened to orders, despite the fact the wind shifted and it caught everyone, not just me, off-guard.
It did STELLAR things to my confidence, let me tell you. I stopped being open with them. I stopped wanting to learn from them. I closed off and felt that if I was that much a nuisance, I should just remove myself from their equation. It took a full three days for anyone to notice I was gone. I felt like a fool and a failure, and so alone that I just wanted to disappear. -Hercules- lied to my face when he said he would look after me after all of that. Hmph. Yeah, right. He's never home, so I'm left to deal with the taunts and insults from the rest of our teammates without his "help". I'm constantly put down and kicked into corners without him around, not even Captain Star treats me well anymore. I always respected the Captain, respected the guys, respected my big brother -Hercules- from day one of joining the team...and look where that got me :(
So imagine MY surprise when the Captain told me he'd hired another kid to help me with my jobs when the Duchess herself visited the harbour. Yeah...Captain Star has a thing against hiring kids; I was an exception because -Hercules- put in a good word for me and took me under his wings. But another kid? Oooh, his ego and pride took a blow somewhere along the lines there!
Turns out the kid was a Riverlander, and a good one at that. His name's .Sunshine., and, again, to my surprise, he is the heckuva lot younger than me, by like three and a bit years. That kinda put me on the spot, ya know? I've never considered myself to be a mentor of anything, let alone trying to learn this new kid the ropes in less than half a day, if that. I've never really seen differences between our team and anyone else. To me, everyone's different, but we share the same heart and the same working ethos. The more I work with him, the more I grow to like him. I like him a lot. We share a passion together, a love of life, and I feel I can tell him anything and everything. Dime just adores him, which is an even better sign!
I hope that when the Duchess' visit is all over, he can stay with us. That'd make everything 20% cooler =D
