Ah was born in a small township, known to the folks 'round 'ere as Middleton. It's situated off a branching part of the murky depths as it licks and winds its way through the narrow channels and districts of the Riverland territory. It's a beautiful little patch of space where a few dozen folks earn their keep maintaining, patrolling and working the lazy, winding folds, day in, day out, three hundred an' sixty five days a year. Cotton is a staple of the east, whilst sheep and cattle stations are more prolific to the west. Way up in the northern boundaries are the borderlines drawn in blood, sweat and tears by the Upper Highland folk, and to the south lies the gateway to the industrialization of Bigg City Port.
Middleton's a sleepy little river town, quiet most days, and peaceful. But sometimes peace is as fleeting as the work orders. It's a constant struggle t' survive, what with so many folks losing their way of life and having to pack up and move either to the city or up in the highlands, an' both of those tend to have bigger difficulties. The Highlands treat us as less-than-savoury folks, thieves, swindlers, traitors...it's hard to keep a stellar reputation as non-confrontational folks up in their borders. An' the city's no' much better, we're backwards t' them. We're the folks who don't know diddly 'bout hard work in their eyes, an' provin' it can be harder than pulling fangs.
Riverfolk don't 'ave a lot o' stuff easy, y'know?
Ah didn't ask t' be born a "river boy". That's just th' way th' fates went. Ah was given a hand o' cards and told t' play life with 'em in hand. Ah've had a fair share o' troubles along th' way, what with bein' branded a traitor for stickin' up fer m'self, an' then bein' exiled from the upper river region...but ah choose not ta dwell on it too much. There's no real point bein' angry for defending m'self and someone else from a gang intendin' ta do y'all harm. Ah don't blame th' Harbour Master for sendin' me packin', e'en though he knew ah was right. There's rules to play by here, and ah broke one, ah had ta deal with th' consequences like everyone else has to. S'just the way the Riverland works.
Ah'd been on me own for quite some time a'fore the Harbour Master caught up with me again. At first ah thought th' gang had dug somethin' else up on me ah didn't know nuttin' about, but it turns out he'd made a deal with the Cityfolk, somethin' about a temporary type placement into a Bigg City crew o' sorts. To say ah wasn't thrilled at the opportune woulda been a mighty big lie - y'see, there's not many dreams a boy like me can have bein' a "lower class" an' all. It's how the River's always been. If y'all have dreams, it's either to work here the rest o' yer life or to hope for a placement in some Highlands team or a farm nearby ta where you live. Not all of us want that t' happen. Ah've always aimed fer th' stars. Funny as y'all might think that dream is, ah've never wanted to live an die on this river. Ah've always felt ah belong someplace else, like ah'm being called towards something better on the far horizon. A lot o' folks have said ah'll never make it, but th' least ah can be doin' with mah time is tryin'.
Ah've since encountered another kindred spirit ya might say in a Rreign named Ten Cents - he's part of the Cityfolk team ah'm ta be helpin' out. So far it's been really wild, and ah really respect 'im; he's been through a LOT and I hope ah can live up to his standards and way o' life. An' maybe...just maybe...ah can be th' friend he's been lookin' fer :)
