Here I Sit...

I've always been on this shelf, amidst the dust and words. The meat of a book sandwich.
I have always looked out in the same direction, at the same spines of my silent companions.

It's just me and Lona here now, sweet Lona with her nest of gray hair (I wish I could settle in there instead of on this wood slab). She shuffles around, dusting the best she can, but it's been years since she could reach the shelf I'm on. I watch her all day, when I can, with a great fondness in my dull button eyes. She was the one who placed me here, decades ago-- a gift from her mother, long gone. She gazes up at me every once in a while, tenderness evident in her watery eyes.

It wasn't always like this though. Wasn't always empty and fading.

People used to swarm to this bookstore as if it were a carnival in summer time. We sold, loaned, and donated. We were a center for the community. Literally a wealth of knowledge shared and traded down generations. We had events for the children with picture books and coffee for the moms and dads who just smiled on. We never turned away a person who wanted to learn. If they couldn't afford a novel, we lent it to them for however long, even knowing we'd never see it returned. But Lord did we love it.

Times change though. The people stopped coming. One by one, our employees were tearfully let go, until it was just us.

Me and Lona.
Lona always busy, dusting and smiling to herself, lost in times gone by. And me, ever watching and hoping for the day where the slow pleasure of reading becomes cherished again.
