"Seeing as my son is off on another one of his adventures, you may as well sleep in his den until he returns." Mistryl said.

Duskfeather began, "Respect, shaman, but I doubt I can fit into a Celinox den..." but then stopped. Clearly the building they had entered was used as an Aerie's den. At the back there was even a tiny ancestor shrine, occupied by a single box.

"Windborne's mother was taken prisoner by the Bloodred Aeries and badly hurt escaping." Mistryl sighed. "Sadly, I was unable to save her. She died shortly after he was born."

"Is that her heart in the shine?"

"It is. I had it preserved as is the custom."

"She was a brave lady, then." Duskfeather bowed respectfully to the shrine and the box therein. "The Bloodred Aeries ate my parents' hearts after they killed them, and I was never able to recover the ones from their shrine. The clan that adopted me had their own ancestor shines, of course, but it isn't the same." She paused. "Why did he stay here with you instead of being raised by another clan?"

Suddenly Duskfeather was embarrassed. Mistryl was a shaman: if he had judged it best to raise an orphaned Aerie cub himself instead of giving him to a local Aerie clan it was not her place to question him. However, Mistryl did not seem annoyed. "The other clans refused to take him in. They felt he looks too much like his father," he said.

"His father? What -- " she stopped. "His father was one of the Bloodred Aeries who held his mother prisoner."

"Even so."
