The small, rundown bar at the edge of the busy city was one of the fae's favorite places to go. Young musicians came to seek their golden roads in the smoke and stench of beer. They were all determined and confident the first few weeks, perhaps even months, that they would achieve.
Humans were set apart from other creatures because of this. They had imagination. Creativity. Call it heart, spirit, or soul but they poured their lives into what they did. Whether it be from written or visual, or even culinary, humans put their essence into their work. All humans had the capacity for it, but there were those who simply dedicated themselves to the arts. Those were who the fae adored. The ones here though were usually more vibrant. They simply reeked of life with each having their own flavor and aroma. This particular human in front of it was emitting a nutty scent. Its absolute favorite and the fae was holding every part of itself back from tearing into him. Yet it would wait. It would continue to pull at his emotions to make the flavor really develop.

“I can't believe she thinks she can sing without me!” The human ranted at it. “What songs made her so popular? Mine!” The fae cooed softly in the way it had perfected over the decades.
“Oh, you're so right Jess. The people think it's the singers that have talent, but what would they sing without people like you?” The human drew himself up and the fae allowed a smile as the scent around him deepened.
“You're right, Elias!” The name threw it for a second before it remembered the current skin it donned. Right, right. One of its recent favorites. It flexed its human fingers before patting the man's chest.
“You don't need her. Then again, you won't need anyone soon.” The male's mouth twisted in question before dropping open in a gasp as the fae dug its fingers into his chest to pierce his heart.
The fae’s human disguise melted into black skin that stretched tight across bones. Its chest broke into pieces that floated above each other to create the illusion of a torso. Its hands ended in tips with broken fingers that were more like shards of dark glass than digits. These were dug deep into his body, drawing not blood, but the very spirit out of the human’s body. The fae stretched to its full height, dragging the man up into the air as it stood on legs that came to deadly points. A grin curled its lips as the human stared bug eyed up at it, the last of its guise disappearing as twisted horns raised above and below its skull. This was truly the most delightful part of the meal.

The delicious spirit filled up the empty void within it and it giggled as he watched the human begin to grow ashen. It didn't need to feed this way. It could simply absorb essence from the artwork the humans put out. But what was the fun of that? The faces of humans locked in agony, pain, grief, shock, and so many other emotions were spices that just added to the gourmet meal.
The human’s skin dried and grayed and soon his head fell backwards, limbs going limp. The fae sighed with pleasure as it let the body fall from its fingers. It was always so lovely to see the human husks this way. They were prettier like this.
“Jess?” A woman opened the roof door and peered out. “Jess, I'm sorry can we talk?” She gasped as her eyes took in the fae yet turned to a gag as the spindly fingers shot out to dive into her throat and crush around her vocal cords. Her toes dragged along the ground as it hauled the human female close to it and, much like the male, lifted her into the air to better watch her face.
Her spirit was not as strong, not as tasty, but a dessert was always nice.
