The Little Pincushion

Bright little beaded eyes shine out of a beaming happy little face. The little Priggle Pincushion is always happy to see me. She lights up the room with her smile and always makes me sigh with relief that I am hidden in my sewing room.

I talk to her as I sew. I make clothing for myself, and my children. Some for my husband as well, but for work he uses cheap rough clothing. He likes to keep my special clothes for best. Something special to go out in, especially when there is embroidery on it. My children don't notice it as much, and their play clothing of course has none. But I love to sit in the big chair in the corner and emboider something for a special occasion. Seeing them wear it in my head as I talk to the little smiling pincushion who keeps me company.

Sometimes I think I see a nod or movement from the pincushion itself or the strawberry tail. Or it seems she plays hide and seek with me. I turn my back and poof she falls under a carpet. Under a carpet!! I ask you, how? I also try to keep the same coloured pins in the same area, but every morning they are in a different place! My husband thinks I am being silly. Maybe she is played with by the wee folk, but I doubt it.

She allows me to chat and talk about my day. The boring parts no one else would listen to. I can ask questions, trying to figure out a problem. It's amazing, but it must be the light that makes her little smiling face sometimes seem stern, like she is saying "come on now, be truthful", or her head is tilted to the side as though listening intently. Sometimes I say negative things and... honestly it seems her tail twitches. Like she's irritated when I say something negative about myself. It's helped me be more positive and not say bad things about myself. It feels silly, thinking my little pincushion is upset with me. But it's made me happier.

She is my quiet friend in the night while my family sleeps and I mend or sew. I'd be lost without her.
