Iris looked down at the bed and sighed deeply. No tears, my darling, he had told her, and she had done her best to comply over the past few months. It was hard to believe that her husband, the only love she had ever had, was lying on that bed, struggling to stay alive.

Where had the time gone? She could still remember the day they had met in the schoolyard whilst playing a game of tag- he had been so gentle when he tagged her it, like he thought she might break if he hit too hard. She remembered the young boy, with his wild hair sticking up all over the place and his shoes untied while he ran around laughing wildly. They had grown up being fast friends, through the awkward childhood and teenage years. Their peers had mocked them for several years- after all, boys and girls couldn't be friends, could they?

Elijah hadn't been brave enough to ask to court her, but Iris had always been a bold woman and had asked him. They married soon after, having realized that they had both found their true love. He often would sing ‘Moon River’ to her, it had been their first dance at their wedding.

Iris looked down at Elijah again, his face was gaunt and pale, all of his liveliness was gone. His eyes fluttered open for just a moment, but their gazes locked and a small smile crossed his lips. She put her hand on top of his.

Elijah had always had a tough exterior, but he had always let it down around her. He often told her that he was the luckiest man in the world, usually whispered as they held hands while they meandered down the street... while she would secretly think that it was more likely she was the luckiest woman.

She was pulled out of her reverie by a sharp gasp from Elijah. She looked at him again and could tell his time was coming. She leaned over and gave him a loving kiss on the lips, and as she pulled away his chest stopped moving.

No tears, my darling

---

Iris had now been a widow for three months. She was slowly getting use to life alone, although there were moments where she would forget herself. She often still found herself making two cups of tea- just milk for her, two spoonfuls of sugar for Elijah. Life was dull without him- colours seemed less vibrant, food tasted bland- nothing was the same. Her family had been supportive and visited her as often as possible, but even they had noticed that Iris was not herself.

So her family made an attempt at cheering her up- Iris had always loved birds, so they had bought her a small yellow cockatiel. Iris seemed to cheer slightly at the sight of it.

And she had. The small yellow bird- she called it Elisabeth- was her only ray of sunshine in a dreary world. Once in awhile, if she looked too closely, just for a moment- the bird's eyes would remind her of Elijah's. But she would shake her head, and the moment would end.

She would occasionally feed the bird her jam tarts- Elijah had always told her they were his favourite, but she often saw him unsuccessfully trying to hide his face after he ate them so he could spit it out. But he thought it made her happy when he ate them, so she didn't have the heart to tell him she knew. The bird often had a similar reaction- she would take large bites, pretend to swallow and then rush to the other side of her cage to dispose of them.

She thought she was losing her mind, why did a cockatiel remind her of her dead husband?

Until one day, when she woke from her nap to the whistled melody of 'Moon River’. She looked over at Elisabeth, but said nothing. She didn't want to spoil the moment.

And then, Elisabeth winked at her. Just like Elijah had for all those years.

Iris burst into tears.
