They speak of the heroes that come from the sewers, who defy their nature as street rats, and become the adopted darlings of the higher ups who always pushed that through a little hop and skip one could leave the gutter they were born in.
And for those of us who can't jump -- the family of the hero, left behind -- those who raised them, fed them, lived alongside them and treated them as flesh and blood -- in those stories we become the hordes of villains. Those embellished storybooks can have as many gently inspired words caressing the quality of life as they want. But we are not life. We exist only in the context of the one who left us. Who turned their back and, once returning, killed us in mercy.
And for all I do, and for all I've done, I will be the villain, always. There's nothing else in this life for me, no, for I was not chosen to be pulled into the brilliant and pure sunlight, and thus I am the darkest and lowest of the vermin. If they really think me so irredeemable, well... You must be right. For what can I do but be the one to break into your homes? To take your life and love? It's only my nature, after all.
