The date was July 20th, 2016.

The air was moist with the breath of summer. Flowers were in bloom. Birds of many colors flitted about picking at the soft ground. Diminutive creatures hopped through the unkempt lawn belonging to the lonely home we had been staying. In the middle of it all there was me, fried chicken hanging out of my mouth, gesturing a mozzarella stick temptingly toward six tiny faces huddled defensively on a porch that was not our own.

Some of the kittens approached, eyes jumping between the food and me, unsure if they wanted the artery-clogging snack enough to take the risk. It was 10 minutes I had been sitting there, watching kittens crawl forward then spring back to the huddle again. They looked amongst each other at each return as if verifying what they had seen on their venture out. Then from the back of the pile of the fearful, two stepped forth.One had bright turquoise eyes. The other tailing behind subtly judged through the color gold. Maybe their bravery was bolstered by the company of the other, but once I made sure they weren't going to turn back, I gently tossed crumbs their way. They followed every piece of the trail until they were finally so close I could touch them. They are so small, I thought, studying the babies calculating how best to pick apart their reward for coming so far. They are so small, and if I so felt it, I could just...

I looked between the two for just a moment. Before I could doubt myself I picked the golden-eyed ball of fur from the ground and tiptoed like a thief back into the home. He must have been stunned by the action because he didn't even struggle; he just gazed up at me, deep fried cheese stick still hanging from his jaws. Surprisingly his cooperative attitude lasted as I bathed him in the sink. The signs of our neighbor's neglect were obvious now as I had begun the work undoing it. Hundreds of fleas were washed down the drain and the water ran thick with the filth caked deep under his fur. He was far too thin. His ears were hot and stuffed with debris.

"He's thankful, that's why" is what my dad had offered as an explanation for the lack of resistance. "He knows you saved him."

I didn't argue. I couldn't. Not with the proof purring in my arms.

As he became comfortable with his new life his personality began to show in full.
Always present in my shadow, he watched protectively and made himself known when I needed him. He was well behaved, but he took no shit; if you tried to push him around he'd let you know how he felt about it. He was strangely attached to a small kitten doll I gave to him, and if I changed rooms, he made sure it joined us. Most ironically he touted himself about as if he were royalty and not a fragile gutter creature I had to comb the parasites off of.

I was in a terrible place mentally when and long before we crossed paths. I didn't care for living. The future didn't interest me because I didn't have a place in it. To be blunt, I can't say that without him keeping me tied to this world I would have lasted much longer in it. It's a fucking cheesy story but I guess that's what you get when you buy your motivation with a single mozzarella stick.
