No one keeps a secret so well as a child.

He remembers the day he was taken in clearly. Really, the red dawn that persisted after the storm.

The water rushed into the confines of his little room and suddenly the child was free from the ship that housed him ever since he had been created in some oversized test tube. That would have been a reason to celebrate, if it weren't for the fact that he was scared out of his wits and shivering.

He wasn't out there for long until a lithe thing rose up from the depths and began to inspect the wreckage. It moved about erratically, but the water made no waves when it moved. And when it looked straight at him, he froze.

The shape came up to him, its mottled fur drenched in saltwater and other ocean detritus, rising up until it was walking on water. It-- she quirked its head. "You are the only cargo? You must be important."

He didn't know what to say.

She sniffed at him in a deliberate fashion. "Have you a name?"

He shook his head.

"Smart." She was pensive for a moment until her features became sharp. "How about a deal?"
