Once, a long time ago, there was a lovely young girl, much beloved by her village. She was preened by the village elders, and her parents bought her only the finest of adornments. And the feathers of her tail were much treasured.

It came to be that the lovely young girl was engaged to an equally lovely young man. They had been friends as chicks, and though they lead very different lives, they were inseparable in all things. It seemed a match made in heaven. And the village rejoiced.

But there was rot there in that village, the girl soon learned. They set her up for glory and tore her down swiftly. They plucked her feathers and stole her face, and now she must hide her shame from the world, alone and abandoned. That rotten village.
