Your average criminal sees life as a series of small wins over a system they can cheat at best and allow to consume them at worst. They never see these events from above, a beautiful puzzle board of connections held together by fragile strings. A tug here, a cut there, and you can change the entire picture...possibly even destroy it.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I often tend to do that. It comes of having been spoon-fed the mantras of the academic world before discovering an entirely new world that exists in the seedy underbelly of streets that parallel university lanes. I was a Professor of the highest order. Esteemed by my colleagues, adored by my students and occasionally roasted by a rival or two. I was so incredibly bored! Was this to be the extent of my life? Writing papers, staring out at the masses of slack-jawed student faces year after year? I was barely an adult myself and already I surpassed these dough-faced fools with their easy money. I might as well be a transplant from another planet. (Not that most of them would notice if I started blowing things up with my mind.)

It was at a pub that I met the group that would change my destiny.

He traces a nail over the insignia on the pewter mug out of which he drinks his gin and tonic. Only the best of drinks, only the finest of clothes...this is the standard of living he insists on.

They were brash. Impulsive to the point of recklessness. Loud and rude and not the least bit bothered by that fact. They were everything my pristine parents warned me to avoid, the sort of "low-life bandits" that other Professors liked to joke about in half-concealed whispers. Cowards, the lot of them.

I observed them carefully through the lens of an outsider desperate to find my way in. The expert thief. The weapons expert. The muscle. These were only a few characters in this dynamic play. Their particular brand of string was frayed around the edges, with possibly a few strings missing.

They had strings, nonetheless.

I realized that with my unique knowledge and connections to the "respectable" world, I could turn them into something marvelous. Something unstoppable.

Something against which the world would have no defense.

Their safe-cracker was perhaps the most suspicious of the lot at first but my knack for directing her to rich scores with minimal security won even her over in the end.

He studies a photograph of a young woman with flinty eyes and the lean, lithe body of a fox about to dart in for a kill. A small, private smile twists his lips for just a moment, then vanishes.

It was Kangin, their brutal and short-tempered leader, who would never be persuaded of my superior leadership skills. Convincing the group to turn on him took time and careful planning. Setting up a sting for the SAI agents who took him down without casting the light of suspicion on myself or my crew was, shall we say, genius.

Alright...I'm not the most modest man. We all have our weak point.

I move among my merry thieves, coming and going as I please. There will be the occasional new recruit who casts sideways glances on the supposed "little guy" without bulging biceps or a neck thicker than a zentu's leg. They learn in short order that looks can be deceiving. Make a threat against the Professor and you will find yourself stealing spare change down in the sewers...or sweating inside one of SAI's cells.

A shuffling of papers.

The latest reports are favorable, I see. Tomorrow's operation will go forward as planned. Its inevitable success will give us access to the southern territories without exciting the jealousy of our greatest rivals in that quadrant.

Such musings will hold. The evening is young and I have other plans to attend to on this fine evening.

He dons a fine sports coat and fixes his hat at a quirky angle, smiling knowingly at his reflection in the mirror.

Ah...the chime. That will be Talryn.

She is the one element I never could have planned. A SAI agent whose instincts are almost on a level with mine. She should be my enemy...yet she has a greater claim on my affections than even the great authors whose works I know down to the finest detail. Given the choice of intimate partners for an evening, Talryn's shape is certainly preferable to a book.

Practically blasphemy, I know. She needs no sorcery to entrap me in a spell of longing. Such exquisite creatures are, fortunately, exceedingly rare.

I allow for the usual rant about her incompetent co-workers, her overly demanding boss and that annoying agent Yuaei who is a constant thorn in her side. When she pauses to take a breath, I kiss her worries away, guiding her to the sofa with a gentle touch.

Our nights are always too short. When I am with Talyrn, I fall into the role of respectable Professor, though that version of myself died the night of my first successful heist. She is the one weakness that my merry band of misfits could exploit, if they were to ever learn the depths of my affection.

Fortunately, there isn't a one among them that will ever get a grip on my string and so control of the board remains firmly in my grip.
