Opo the Friendly Dolphin is what we called her - an orphaned young bottlenose dolphin from the small coastal town of Opononi, New Zealand. She visited Opononi beach on the daily during late winter through the summer of 1955. Gleefully interacting with the people that swam in the shallows, swimming along side fishermen's boats, allowing children to ride on her back, and playing with her favourite toy, a borrowed beach ball. She warmed the hearts of everyone who met her and heard her story. Her sudden passing in the late summer of 1956 left everybody heartbroken and not just those in Opononi, but all over the country. She was buried on the beach, where a stone statue resembling her with a child by her side was erected, immortalising her story forever in the coastal town of Opononi, home of our Friendly Dolphin, Opo.
