She often wandered deep, deep within, an attempt to run away from what is thought to be impossible to avoid. Here, she could hide away from it all, this inner world of hers - her forever home.  Outside, that reality was far from ideal. It did not provide her with complete happiness. Instead, it frightened and hurt her, always seeming to break her heart with such little effort. Insisting on how life should be viewed and lived, it spent its time shoving all of it down Nuppou's throat. The only way to escape reality's consistent manipulation was her inner world.

At least when she dreamed, she could pretend that this was her reality instead - this inner world. There were no rules or guidelines, so anything was possible. That was her world, which meant no overlying power with the ability to control her. So why not make her "here" her new reality instead? What exactly was she holding onto on the outside anymore? That outer world provided her with nothing but discontent, right?

Nuppou stared at her foot that stood on the path connecting reality and her inner world... Out there all of this was considered only her imagination, nothing more.

Why not just cut it off? She thought.

And so, she stepped off, never to look back. This was now her reality, nothing else needed to exist.

Though, with every step she took in this new world surrounding her, she began to realize something. As to what exactly, she could not figure.  Have I had this feeling before? Nuppou could not help but ponder such questioning words. Endlessly roaming the grassy plains into the unknown parts of this new reality, time seemed to seize, and yet she could not stop moving. Wandering through lush forests and beautiful scenery seemed to be taken out of a fairy tale until everything turned dark.

Absolutely everything around her was nothing but darkness, without even the slightest bit of moonlight. The moon that would always be there as night fell, keeping one company until the sun rose once again was not present whatsoever.

Its absence left an empty feeling in Nuppou's tummy, as if something was missing.

"Aren't ya lonely?" A voice rang out.

Nuppou looked around her anxiously. Where was this voice coming from? She couldn't pinpoint it. Is it my consciousness? Why was this inner world of hers so dark? She did not know the answer to that question either. It was as if she was clueless to everything in what she called her "new reality". A thought in which unnerved her to no end.

None of this is actually real. She thought in dismay. As badly as I want to make it real, it will never be that way.   Nuppou lied down, her heart sinking into the pit of her stomach. Am I now stuck here forever? I severed ties to the outer world, after all... Forever lost in a world I will always think is incomplete?

Oh, how she wished for some refreshing bubble tea... Although, in this world she could imagine such a beverage, the true taste would be absent to what it was in that outer world.

Am I really cut off forever? At this point, all Nuppou wanted was to go home - her actual reality. Tears started to stain her cheeks, feeling more lost than ever before, especially surrounded by nothing but pitch black darkness darker than even the latest of nights with clouds covering the pearl moon.

"Wake up, Nuppou." A voice interrupted her self pitying moment.

"Who's there?" Nuppou responded, looking around herself frantically.

"Nuppou! Wake up you silly mongoose!" The voice echoed again. Everything around Nuppou then shifted, blurring altogether, and her world began to spin.

"I'm here!" She called into the stream of colors.

  "Open your eyes already..."

Nuppou blinked open her eyes to sunlight seconds later, a figure in her line of vision. She took in the begin in front of her - bright emerald eyes that matched her green and uniquely pointed hat.   Reilli?

"Ah! You finally woke up!" Reilli shreiked with pure delight.

"You mean I was actually dreaming this entire time?" Nuppou asked in reply.

"Mmm... I suppose so! What did you think you were doing?"   Nuppou watched as Reilli shifted her hat so that it wasn't covering her small, white horns, only to receive a huge grin and flutter of her (also small) black wings as she noticed Nuppou staring. It was in that moment she realized that she could tell Reilli everything. They were best friends after all. The best of best friends.

"I guess I thought I had cut off this world... And began living in my own instead?" Reilli immediately gave her a exasperated look and rolled her eyes playfully.

"So, basically, you wanted to just live in your dreams forever?"

Nuppou nodded meekly, murmuring under her breath, "At least there I can actually protect myself within those dreams... Hide away from all this." She motioned around her at the busy park they were occupying, along with several other beings living their lives amongst everything else our reality consisted of.

"Except," Nuppou sighed heavily, meeting Reilli's eyes. "Something was definitely missing in my world."

"Well, duh," Reilli said as-a-matter-of-factly. "You would be lonely!"

A sudden de-ja-vu swam over Nuppou in that instance. In her dream it wasn't her consciousness speaking to her, answering the one question that seemed to claw at her heart endlessly.

  It was Reilli's...

"Heh. I guess you're right. Living in just your dreams could get a bit lonely..." Nuppou spoke, shrugging her shoulders in a slightly bashful manner. Once again, Reilli sighed and sat down next to Nuppou, admiring the sun beginning to set, finally giving the moon's rightful time to shine.

"Besides," Reilli whispered as she continued to stare at the breathtaking colors. "You shouldn't wait for sleep to start dreaming, silly."

And from that moment on, Nuppou did just that.

They both needed one another, that was clear enough. One to keep the other grounded, while the other opened up doors one never dreamed could exist within this reality of ours.
