The Perfectionist

One doesn't get a title like The Perfectionist without WORKING for it. Everything she made was perfect. And when it stopped being perfect, she fixed it...

The knock was sharp and sudden. 3 quick raps on the door in different spots and then nothing, which meant it was a customer.

"Hold." called a girl as she stood from her workbench. Stretching her arms above her head - and double checking her form in the mirror - she made her way to the heavy steel door that lead outside. As she unlatched it, she stepped to the side and motioned for whoever was on the other side to hurry in.

"What's the problem?" she asked as a couple literally dragging a teenage boy hurried inside, "You weren't due back for 4 more months."

As she relatched the door and turned to the couple, she made eye contact with the teen. He looked scared and confused - like he'd rather be anywhere else.

Ah. A malfunction. she realized.

"Oddi! He's been misbehaving! Talking back, and missing curfew, and saying things like 'I'm your child not your creation!'" the woman hissed, her anger directed at the teen who flinched away from her, "The other day he FAILED his BIOLOGY EXAM. How is he going to be a famous doctor at this rate?!"

"He's been mouthy and rebellious!" the man added from the other side, clutching the boy's arm like he knew he wanted to run, "Raising his voice at his mother, disobeying orders, speaking nonsense like 'I'm not going to be a doctor, I want to work in HOME DECOR'!"

As the couple raged, Oddi never took her eyes off the teen. He shrunk under her gaze looking all the world like her features had twisted into some horrible monster. She finally looked away to the mirror.

Nope. Nothing changed.

"Ok I get it." Oddi stated flatly. Immediately the couple got quiet and the boy's face dropped. As she turned back to the family - she used the term loosely - she stepped up closer to the seated teen and held eye contact again. "Do you know who I am?" At the shake of his head she sighed. Where did he learn to lie? Probably his parents. "I'm the Perfectionist. I'm a mechanic. I fix broken things. And you've become broken, which isn't ideal. So I'm going to fix you."

If Oddi said she was surprised when he tried to run, she'd be a liar too. And she didn't like liars. The couple held the boy in place and Oddi picked up a small box from the table, turning back to him easily.

"PLEASE!" the boy cried, "PLEASE DON'T! I'LL BE GOOD! I'LL BEHAVE! PLEASE!"

"Hush." Oddi responded flatly. His flailing did nothing as the box touched his forehead and then all his movement stopped. Eyes going blank, he began tilting forward only to be stopped by Oddi's hand on his shoulder. "Leave. I will message you when he is fixed." No argument was heard from the couple as they both stepped pass her to open the door and make their way out.

Moving the teen to her worktable, she felt around the back of his head until she found a small slit. Pressing in a small key she had in her pocket she sighed as his head opened to reveal not a brain, but what looked like the inside of an advanced computer - wires and chips crossing over and sending information thru his body. Oddi knew she had quite a night ahead of her. Reprogramming behavior was always annoying.

Everything she made - whether it was items, kids, spouses, signifigant others, teammates, whatever - was perfect. And if it stopped being so, well...Oddi would fix it..
