You saw an angel.

No... not "saw". You "see" a bird, or a squirrel, or another person. Things mundane and earthly. Everyday and disgustingly usual. You don't simply see something as holy as this.

You beheld an angel.

No one believed you, of course. But you saw it with your own two mortal eyes, and that's something they can never take from you. It was... beautiful, a pale horse, but more than that, all feathers and wings and eyes, holy light and halo framing its head. You reached out and touched faith, burning your hand in the process, the only material proof of your encounter. But it was worth it.

You stared up at it reverently like a lover.

Because you did love it. You would have done anything for it, wouldn't you? For it to embrace you, to enfold you in those feathered, eyed wings, hold you so unearthly tight until its sheer holiness burnt away everything that you were, everything that you'd ever been, everything that you'd ever be, leaving naught but ash behind.

But it didn't do that.

And oh, god, some days, you wish it had. Just... burnt you up into nothing, not heaven nor hell, but a secret third thing. Your burns, basically encompassing the entirety of both of your hands (did you reach out at the wrong time...? was that why it rejected you...?), still aches, often and fiercely. Phantom pains for limbs that are still there, still functional.

You lied about it, of course.

At least to the emergency personnel. In the emergency room, you told them you'd had a lapse in judgement and stuck your hand in a bonfire; you're not sure if they believed you, but it was the only thing you could think to say, and even that, you were almost positive, was going to end in an involuntary commitment. But you got lucky, and it didn't.

You tried to tell your friends, your family, what you'd seen.

They didn't believe you. Some of them, no doubt, thought you should have been put in that hospital. At first, it bothered you; a whole hell of a lot, actually. You know what you saw! How could they think you would lie about holiness of that magnitude?! But...

You're at peace with it now.
