You're made of the same salt as the sea

So let the waves crash through you

I’ve missed seeing my sibling’s face - but don’t tell them I said that. Rusalka is always so dapper, well-fitting trousers and tailored coats and all that. I don’t know what they do exactly, but it must be important. Always hustling, always bustling. They know the best stalls at the market, the juiciest rumours whenever I visit home. I bid farewells to my crew, the old faces, the new faces, the Captain, my friend Antoine. He asks whether we’re both going home together. I tell him I don’t know yet. It would be nice. Ma and Rusalka have both come to wait for me at the harbour, and if I feel a little little like I might tear up, I hide it behind a smile that eventually fills my heart with the joy of returning home. I bring gifts, I always do. Ma gets a pretty skirt and spices, and Rusalka gets another bracelet, wooden beads in different shades, mixed in with amber and round little pieces of seaglass. I tell them I purchase them at different harbours, but I only ever buy the beads, the rest is my own handiwork. I wish I could see Kit’s Shoal again, where I know the white-pebbled streets and each neighbour. But Stone Harbour is close enough, familiar enough with work always available at port.

Rusalka tells me not to unpack my bags, as she wants me to accompany her to Miss Lalisa’s boutique, apparently there’s a new job opportunity for both of us that she’s smelling. I hug Ma as she takes a carriage back home, and we’re off to Lalisa’s L’antiques. As we walk, I bore them with stories of my latest adventures. I tell them of the time me and Antoine saw what must have been a dragon swimming under the waves, all silver, fast and cutting through the waves, glinting light right under the surface. Rusalka does not believe my tale, but listens attentively nonetheless. Their loss, it had beautiful silver scales that shimmered in the bright daylight sparkling on the ocean’s waves. I also show the beautiful shell I picked up. The conch itself is quite heavy, and if you press your ear against it, it almost sounds like whispers of the sea. It gives me comfort, to know that I carry the sea with me wherever I go. It’s not something Rusalka needs to know though, they tease me as it is already.

A funny story, really. We had been fooling around by the beach, just spending an afternoon diving for pearls. I saw the shell then, down down down under and deep. It called to me, like it had a halo of light about it. But you should let live things alone, and I surpassed it, even if it kept telling me to pick it up. Eventually, the curiosity had gotten the better of me, and I had woken Antoine up in the middle of the night, so we could go dive for the conch together. In the dark, the waves are ink-black and unforgiving. We couldn’t find it, not without any light. So we had to return without it, and our ship left port early next morning. The funniest thing really - I must have picked it up earlier in the day after all, because I found it within my items only a few days later. No recollection of it whatsoever. My guess is Antoine picked it up, but refuses to take credit for it.

I remember I was five when Ma first took me to Stone Harbour, I remember the first time I saw the Big Ships. I was amazed, I didn’t even know there could be something so large and beautiful. And even when I already knew the sea, knew its beaches and how the waves crash against rocks and splinter into fins of foam, seeing the Harbour felt magical, like there was a whole another type of world. This wasn’t the sea I had come to know but a different beast altogether. I remember I was awestruck by everything - by the houses built on the hillside, by the treasure trove of colours that bloomed on people’s balconies, the thousands (or what felt like it) of different stores everywhere. And most of all, the tall ships. The sailors who worked the docks, navigating the space with ease and expertise I could only dream of. I told Ma I wanted to join a crew then, but she thankfully told me I was way too young. I was full of questions, and it was a time when I thought Ma knew everything - where every ship sailed to, how they operated. Who belonged to which ship, what about their captains and the heroic adventures they surely must have partaken in. And she told me those stories - now that I think of it, most of them likely falsehoods, but the little Tierna believed them all, and wanted to hear about them again and again and again.
