Care to Hear a Song?
Yakthixe cleared his throat, pulling his microphone closer with one tendril-like tongue. With the other, he adjusted his headphones, making sure that they were fastened tightly over his earholes.
“Alright. This is my third try at this one. Tell me what you think, kay?”
The stuffed toys that he had set up around him did not answer, save for the leftmost Wyllop which had begun to tilt onto its side. Yakthixe took its slow descent as a sign he should continue.
After licking his lips nervously, the experiment took a deep breath. “Okay guys. Here I go!” He said.
His tongue reached up to flick a well worn switch on his headphones. Then, after a few short moments, a song began to play. It was one the pet knew well. Yakthixe swayed along with the melody, eyes closed as he awaited his cue.
The plushies continued to stare at the dancing green blob, their gazes blank. One of them was now slowly falling backwards. Before its body could fully reach the floor however, Yakthixe’s maw stretched open. Suddenly, the silence of the room was shattered by a bellowing operatic voice.
The room shook slightly, windows vibrating from the force of the Yakthixe’s voice. Outside, several birds vacated their trees to escape the sudden noise. The toys that had remained upright were now blown onto their backs.
Despite the new cracks that were now forming on his desk mirror, Yakthixe’s singing was not quite as bad as one may have expected. In fact, it would have been almost haunting to anyone who wasn’t close enough to have their eardrums blown out.
Yakthixe continued the three minute length of his song, tongues twirling about at every change of note until the music in his ears finally began to fade. His voice followed its descent, softening until it was but a whisper. Then without any further ado, he slammed his mouth shut.
There was silence again. Pure, clean silence. That was, until the mirror finally shattered onto his desk. That was the fifth one this month. Yakthixe briefly looked up at it, then back down at his fabric audience. He was about to ask his now incapacitated plushies what they had thought, when his owner’s voice called up from the floor below.
“Great work, Sweety! Keep it up!” She yelled.
The experiment puffed out what could be considered his chest, beaming with pride.
“Well then,” He said to his toys, “Just for that, I think I’ll perform an encore!”
