Her shelves of houseplants gave her a sense of comfort. They encroached upon every inch of her home, hanging from the ceiling to sitting patiently in pots her mother had spun. Her father built the home, her mother’s art adorned throughout. But the houseplants? They were her own. The monstera never asked for seconds, for if it did, surely it wither. The pachira wouldn’t wilt, refused even, no matter the abuse. The ficus kept growing and growing, sitting tall and wide in the windowsill of what was once her childhood bedroom. From the street, anyone could observe the luscious, tangled greenery through the fragmented stained glass that complimented each window. She took pride in their growth, watching them thrive. A house of love— living, breathing, built by bare hands. She boasted occasionally to the neighbor who would ask as they strolled by her front window. Why would you keep buying more plants? It’s already beautiful enough! She’d chuckle to herself, but the question had to be asked. It gave her peace, she would respond, to make beauty of the familiar. What an honor to grow in the dirt that raised you. Perhaps it has never been about comfort in the first place..
