It woke beneath a sky the color of ash, buried beneath layers of black soil and the remains of a world that had been dead for longer than anything living could remember, and when its eyes finally opened for the first time, the strange creature did not know its own name, its purpose, or even what kind of thing it was supposed to be.

Its body was small and green, shaped vaguely like a Venus flytrap, with two wide leaves extending from its sides like arms and a pair of curious eyes growing just above its toothed mouth, while thin roots hung from its lower body and disappeared into the poisoned earth beneath it, connecting it to something vast and ancient that seemed to be waiting inside the soil.
It slowly pulled itself free and looked across the valley.

There were no trees, no grass, no insects and no birds, only the remains of an extinct civilization scattered across the landscape, rusting machines half buried in the dirt, collapsed towers, broken roads and enormous craters filled with dark water, and although the creature had never been taught anything, it somehow knew what had happened here. The knowledge was part of its existence.

Long ago, another species had lived across the planet, a species that had built enormous cities and machines capable of changing the climate, splitting atoms and destroying entire regions, until eventually those machines had been turned against one another during a war so violent that every living thing had disappeared.
The creatures that had started the war were gone now, but their weapons had left something behind.

Poison, radiation.
And a planet that had forgotten how to grow.

The little plant-animal felt something move inside its stomach and realized that it was hungry, so it wandered toward one of the black pools and lowered its mouth into the strange liquid, swallowing the toxic chemicals that remained there. Instead of killing it, the poison became energy.

Its body glowed faintly beneath its green skin as the radiation entered its cells, and for the first time it understood what it had been created to do: it was not simply alive, it was hungry for the remnants of the dead world.

The creature spent years wandering through the wasteland, consuming everything that had once been considered toxic, drinking contaminated water, absorbing radioactive minerals from the soil and feeding on strange chemical deposits left behind by the weapons of the extinct species, and every substance it consumed was slowly transformed inside its body into something new... Life.

The first thing it created was a flower. It appeared beside the creature one morning, growing from a patch of soil that had been completely barren the day before, with delicate yellow petals with purple freckles, opening toward the sunlight. The creature stared at it with wide eyes, then gently touched one of its petals with a leaf-hand.
It did not understand beauty, but something inside it told the creature that this was important, so it continued.

Everywhere it traveled, plants began to appear behind it, first tiny flowers and patches of moss, then vines and bushes, followed by young trees whose roots pushed deep into the poisoned ground and absorbed whatever the creature had missed. The garden grew around the ruins.
Vines covered the broken machines, flowers emerged from cracks in the old highways and enormous trees pushed their roots through the remains of buildings, slowly hiding the evidence of the species that had once ruled the planet. Through many years the creature roamed, but for them it all was just the blink of an eye.

Then came the animals

Small insects arrived first, followed by birds, rodents and creatures that had never existed before, each one finding food and shelter among the growing forest. The little Venus flytrap watched them all with its curious eyes, sometimes catching insects when it was hungry, sometimes feeding birds it's nectar, simply sitting among the flowers while dragonflies rested on its leaves.

It had become the heart of a new ecosystem

Centuries passed, and the creature grew larger, its roots spreading beneath the entire valley while its body became stronger and stranger, until it was no longer simply a plant or an animal but something entirely new, a living bridge between the two. Eventually, almost nothing remained of the old civilization.

The toxic rivers became clear, the radioactive soil became fertile, the ruined cities disappeared beneath forests. And the wasteland became a vast green garden filled with creatures that had never known war.

One evening, the strange plant stood on a hill overlooking everything it had created, its leaf-hands resting against the earth as the wind moved through the trees. It still remembered the extinct species in the only way it knew how, as fragments of knowledge carried within its cells, as fossils in the ground, and although it could never understand why they had destroyed themselves, it understood what their destruction had given it.

They had left behind death, it had turned that death into life and beneath the quiet sky, surrounded by flowers, trees and animals, the last poison of the old world finally disappeared into the roots of the new one.
