Deep in the woods, shadows stirred. They flowed out of a small cave opening, completely silent. The only thing visible to human vision would be the faint gleam of eyes, catching starlight. One of the Shadows, more solid seeming than the rest, lifted its silver eyes to the horizon. Then it separated from the others and sped off, as if it had caught a scent. After a moment the rest followed, swift and dark as ravens.

The silver-eyed Shadow moved quickly, not running and leaping as a dog whose form it took, but flowing along the ground. At times the Shadow had impossibly long legs stretching out over the earth, sometimes too many legs, and sometimes none at all. It kept the dog shape only vaguely â€“ the only constant were its shining eyes.

A flame in the night - ahead was a lone traveler huddled near a campfire. The Shadow licked its silvery teeth with a tongue the color of pitch at the sight. The pack flowed forward.
