Once there was a creature, a magnificent beast. He was beautiful and deadly. Coarse fur of crimson and ash dawned his body and massive wings sprang forth from his shoulders.
The creature was awing, and therefor desired. Who would not want such an incredible animal in their possession?
And so he was captured, brought to civilization and put on display- sold to the highest bidder.Unfortunately the beast did not want to be owned. Behind wrought iron he thrashed out at any who came too near. After mutilating his new master he was sedated.
When he woke up it was dark and he was in searing pain... but he was no longer caged. For a moment his hopes fluttered. He was free. Spreading his wings he took flight but came crashing down all too soon.
Tethered. Chained. Restrained.
He felt the suns rays hit his fur but could not see the reassuring photons.
They had stolen his freedom, his life, and finally his sight.
Enraged he attacked any who came near him, but before long he realized it was futile. The man kept coming back, often talking to him; through which he learned the language. The caregiver spoke of the sky and the stars, a place to call home and how wrong it was for such a creature as him to be here, chained like a dog.
Soon life fell into an easy routine. The man was kind to him. Kind, like no other human had been. He was even allowed to fly occasionally. He accepted that he would never get home. He accepted that his old life was gone and that this schedule of talking, food and minimal freedom was expected.
He learned the language and eventually the conversations were no longer one sided. The man was startled when he first conversed but soon found his cynical sense of humor and philosophy entertaining.
Then the man came no more. Another care giver gave him his food and left him locked up. He was unfamiliar and cruel.
A bitter taste rose in his throat. The kind man was gone. He was never coming back.Pain and rage consumed him once again. Mauling the new caregiver he broke free of his chains and ran away.
He would never trust again.
Though he is physically free, he would never be free from his memories.
The world is black to him. There is no light, no future, only the bleak outcome of a life lived in hell.
For what is freedom when still subjugated to the darkness? Some things were never meant to live in cages.
