The name 'Edrik' is not very Hawaiian (it's English) but it is close enough to the pronunciation of his proper name (a grating, choppy sort of gurgle) that he doesn't bother correcting people.

Edrik is a magma-cat and he was, until recently, one of the pets of the volcano goddess Pele. Depending on his mood he might claim anything from her having kicked him out due to female hormones, a bad mood or unfairly and foolishly favouring the older tom he'd been trying to take some territory from. However he tells it though the end result is the same; once she lost her temper and destroyed his little volcanic den, he was essentially a homeless stray. Unable to return to the realm which he had been born to, he is stuck among the humans, animals, plants and weather which make up the outside of the planet.

Edrik can take a human form at will, and slip from that to something like a dark red-brown bobcat with a pale underbelly. In both forms he has a double row of spikes running down the middle of his back—more like nubs when he is in his human shape while in the feline form they are several inches long. He can also cause things to melt or burst into flames with a touch of his hand, the power however is easier to invoke and far more dangerous while in his cat-like form.

Edrik has his own, personal ghost; a crab he calls Rangoon which hates him almost as much as he hates it.

When Pele lost her temper with him and destroyed Edrik's den--a relatively tiny volcanic vent which was near to a small uninhabited island—there was little damage done to anything else... Except for one large crab.

It had been living on the outside of the little rocky projection, the top of which was exposed to air when the tide receded, and it had been living there very happily for many years. When everything went to hell though, the crustacean was killed. So angered by its own senseless death, the crab now haunts Edrik, nipping at him with its claws, making clicking noises and scuttling about to irritate Edrik.
