Have you ever been in love? I have, just once. It was don't-leave-me love, clingy love, the kind that makes your throat close instead of your mind open. I loved her in the only way my lonely attention-starved body could. I wanted to spend every moment near her; to swallow her whole and have her live in my belly; to breathe her like air.

I needed her, and she needed me.

Relationships like that, where you feel like you're on fire when you're around them, either fizzle out or burn everything down around them. Ours was hellfire. Bright and eternal. We were obsessed with each other, and everything we did was filled with absolute hunger for each other - mind, body, and soul.

She worked for a local grocery store owned by old hippies who paid their workers way above market value and sold handmade soap and avocado dip. Like Trader Joe's crossed with your local liberal bookstore.

- rita is a career criminal mainly working for her cousin eugene, a gun runner and drug dealer, as well as the occasional extracurricular. she is mostly a hitwoman, working with smaller caliber guns. she is good at her job, but her interpersonal issues sometimes threaten it. she is quite a dramatic person. she's well known in nyc for flashing her money and her loud personality. she does do a decent job at almost entirely masking a very deep dark streak in her personality.

- her motivation is not cruelty but greed and recognition, among other things

- close interpersonal relationships tend to soften her careful lines, so she tries to avoid much more than acquaintances. her getting close to someone has resulted in a disastrous outcome at least once before. her cousin tries to keep some semblance of control over her
