Rani's previous life was one of leisure and contentment. She grew up in a close family, surrounded by demons of her type; ones that were nearly hybrids with the gryphons we imagine today, albeit more humanoid. These people still claimed the power of flight, and used it for everything they knew, including hunting and returning home in the rural lands they lived in. Rani made one mistake in her, by demonic standards, short life; she strayed out of her territory in Hell and ventured deeper than her people belonged. Finding slaves is a popular job for those demons not fit to serve the demons of Sin, and roving bands surrounded her land. In little time she came across a group of them in her exploration, and was subsequently captured. These demons snapped her wings, and the newly grounded Rani found herself transported into a completely new life.

She went through years of slavery, and in time became silent and obeying. The times were hard, and their toll upon her was great. On the last day of Rani's life, she was traveling with another slaver she had been sold to. As they crossed sparse and unfriendly land, the better to avoid other slavers, her emaciated body gave out. She was abandoned there to her death, and death she did find. This happened hours later, after another soul had tripped upon her. She never saw whoever they were, as close to death as she was, but she was alive enough to feel them begin to drag her to the unknown. During the procedure, she perished.

The first sensation of Rani's new life was the brush of fingers on her neck, seeking the pulse from the heart that had just begun beating. Her first sight was that of blind eyes staring into nothingness above her. Later she learned that the man who had brought her back, called Ocean, had done so blind, relying on instinct for the proper runes and such. He had obtained her after her death, thinking only to use her blood and essence for his crafts. A sudden wash of loneliness changed Ocean's worn mind, and secured Rani's return. In the process, he had cast a healing spell to fix her wings, but a sacrifice must be given for any soul's return. Her sacrifice came in the form of her ability to fly, leaving her wings hanging uselessly behind her.

Rani had planned to leave, but the sight of the tired and unhappy man who had brought her back swayed her decision. At the same time, his quiet and giving personality heralded the return of her dominative one. She once again became a driven woman, quick to anger and energetic. Rani can be rather forceful when it comes to getting others to listen to her, and at times she may become a bit possessed by her sudden fits of anger and attempt to strike one if they disobey her. Thankfully, these fits are soothed by Ocean's words and presence. To this day the two remain together, Ocean bending to her will and Rani driving his work.
