Yusuke Urameshi is a punk, known for his reputation as the top fighter in his district. Usually seen skipping class or fighting his rival Kuwabara Kazuma, Yusuke has lived a tough life: his father is gone and his mother is usually out on an alcoholic binge, his peers hate him and most of the teachers at Sarayashaki Junior High want nothing more than to see him fail at everything.

While skipping class one day, Yusuke was accidentally killed while saving a young child from being hit by a car. Yusuke awoke to find himself a wandering spirit, he was soon greeted by Botan, a messenger of Spirit World and what is known in legend as the Grim Reaper, She would then tell Yusuke of an ordeal that the Spirit Worlds leader, Konema had in store for him which would restore his life, Yusuke of course agreed. The ordeal was simple all he had to do was hatch a Spirit Beast from an egg. The egg fed off of positive and negative energy, if he fed the beast positive energy it would hatch a kind monster that would lead him into the realm of the living. Should he feed it negative energy, it would hatch a fearsome monster that would slowly and painfully devour his spirit, ending any hope of returning to life. In an effort to save his best friend Keiko Ukimura (whom he loves, though hed never admit it) from a fire that threatened to destroy his body, Yusuke had no choice but to sacrifice the energy from his Spirit Egg, seemingly ending his hope of resurrection. However, Koenma, son of King Yama, saw Yusukes noble deed and opted to grant him resurrection anyway.

After another stressful day and a last minute kiss from Keiko that donated the life energy needed to resurrect him, Yusuke returned to the realm of the living. However, it came with a price. Now, Yusuke must undergo an entirely new ordeal, as the Spirit Detective of the Earth Realm, a role which pits him face to face with the toughest demons and monsters in the world, most encounters a matter of the fate of the world.
