The city was gray with rain. Buildings loomed over the lonely sidewalks and engulfed the slick streets in shadow. The sky was smothered in clouds and the only sound was the steady hissing of the falling rain. A lone car drifted down the road and out of sight, uttering a low humming noise and kicking up muddy water, its headlights cutting into the darkness and then returning it. Quietly, a rain-soaked, wolf-like dog peered out from an alleyway. It lowered its muzzle to the ground, its slate gray, startling eyes peering up at its surroundings. He shook the water and mud from his brown and tawny coat, and stepped onto the sidewalk, stopping every few steps to look about suspiciously, his front paw lifting up in a dog-like manner. The dog walked with a wolf's gait; that silent, unmistakable gliding wolf stride that wolves possess.
Suddenly, the dog froze, its ears pricked and slate eyes wide with alert. A woman and child with umbrellas had turned a corner and were walking in the dog's direction. A low growl entered his throat; he felt fear rise in his chest. He took a few steps back, his tail between his legs and fur bristling. It was then that the child saw the dog and pointed him out to his mother. They both called out to him. The dog froze, eyes wide with fear and head lowered.
Suddenly the child made way to him. Instincts took over and the dog bared his fangs, snarling defensively. He knew what creatures of this kind were capable of. He had learned this snarling kept them at bay. Still, the child did not stop. Alarmed, the dog took a step back, and his snarl became quieter. He was on the verge of turning around and running when the mother ran up behind the child and scooped him up. She swung her umbrella at the dog, yelling angrily. The dog darted into the safety of the alleyway, disappearing into the darkness. The woman turned to her son.
"That dog is vicious, stay away from it." she uttered.
