I don't really get along with people, to be honest. My father discovered my talent for alchemy when I was 5 and since then it was non-stop studying, in other words, stuck in my room cramming in book by book. It wasn't going exactly fast and father and I often fought about my results. It changed when I turned 7, mother gave birth to a girl, my little sister Chena. In the beginning I didn't really like her. She was always pulling my books away and dad would scold me instead of her. But after a while we started to get along more.. well more after 5 years. Chena wasn't very good at alchemy and she often cried when she was scolded for destroying the spell. One day I went into her room and found her curled up in her bed. 'Daddy's mean.. he hates me.' she sniffled. I smiled and stroked her head 'No, dad's just strict. If you want, I can give you some lessons?'
She was a much faster student than I was, every opening we had we'd get together and study. We became close siblings, although we often irritated each other when we weren't studying. I came home one day to find my sister on the floor curled up in a ball. Apparently she screwed up something and had taken quite a beating from the impact it created. So I decided to cheer her up. I bent down and pat her head. 'Hey sis, How are you?'
'Miserable, it blew up in my face again. I'm no good.'
'Hey don't say that. Here,' I placed my hand on the ground and slowly lifted it off the ground, as I did a few small crystal beads floated out of the floor, they were minerals that I could extract from the ground. I took them and held them up to her, she always loved beads. 'for you!' She slowly lifted her head off her knees to look at them and a faint smile crossed her face as she took them. Thank you big brother..' I smiled and hugged her.
Days like these were pretty common in our house, mother tried her best to protect us, but in the end we always had to fend for ourselves.

A few years later we were in the forest near our house. Chena, who was 11 then, was playing with the forest animals and picking flowers for mother, while I was looking for berries. 'Ren!! Did you see that?' I looked over my shoulder. 'No, what should I have seen?' 'A dragon Ren! A real baby dragon! I'm going to follow it!' 'C-Chena!' But she already left. I shrugged and turned my attention back to the berries and herbs. We had been here so many times that we completely memorized the place.

After a few hours or so I found everything and stood back up, stretching my legs from trudging through the muddy fields and crouching for so long. Chena still hadn't returned and I was starting to get worried. 'Chena! We have to go-'

'AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!'

A bone chilling scream swept through the forest and made me freeze in mid-sentence. And it got worse when I recognized who's scream it was... it was Chena's. I dropped the bag I was carrying and sped off in the direction from which the scream came.
What I saw was my biggest nightmare. Chena, helpless and scared trapped in a sea of Shades. For the people who don't know them, they are creatures from the depths of the earth, they live to drain life out of others and turn friends on each other or even their own kind on themselves. Twisted beings. Father always warned us for them. They rest at nothing to see your demise. She called out to me, 'Ren! Get out of here! S-shadows!' and my instincts took over. I used a light spell to repel the Shades for a brief moment and ran towards her, trying to push her to safety. But before I was able to, the shades destroyed the light I created and started to pull us in. I hugged her tight. 'Don't let go! What ever you do!' I'm trying!! I screamed for Linta, my dragon. 'Get father! As fast as you can!' Linta looked worried and quickly fluttered off while I tried to create a new barrier. It failed and the shades broke us apart. Chena screamed and thrashed as black matter started to form over her legs and arms, they were trying to turn her into one of them.

'No.. NO! NOOO!!' I clasped my hands together like one would do in prayer and muttered a few spells. My last spell.
And a huge light swept over the Shades withdrawing them instantly. When the light faded I saw Chena on the ground unconscious. I bent down and tried shaking her to wake up, but my hand passed through her. 'O-oh, right... The spell was to great for me, and ultimately cost me my life.... HOW CLICHÉ!' I screamed into the air as I dropped to my knees.
'You were very brave, Rento.'
I spun around to see a woman in rags, she had golden swirls on her body and her hair was like the midnight sky. 'Who.. are you?' I am called Shiromi. I am a Wish Weaver. I can grant one wish but I cannot bring you back to life. 'Of course.'I thought and looked back at Chena. 'Then...' I looked back at Shiromi. 'I wish to be able to look after my family. And for you to look after them too.' The woman nodded. 'Your wish has been complete. You will return to heaven when you think the time is right.' And she was gone.
Not long after that the shades returned, but father was there now too and together with Linta they fought of the Shades. I saw tears of relief in father's eyes when he saw Chena was still breathing, but all too quickly he went pale when he saw me.. well.. my body.

Back at home mother was inconsolable, so was Chena when she finally woke up. Only father seemed untouched by my death, that hurt.. a bit then. But at night when everyone was asleep I could hear him crying... At the funeral Chena ran away and I followed her to to a temple, where I saw her talk to Shiromi.. about me. Bring him back... please... I went over to her and placed my hand on her shoulder (well, it looked that way to me.) 'I am here Chena.. I'll always be here.'
