The Change

Ezra was going for his nightly run by the edge of the woods. He wished his sister, Thora, were there but she had chosen to stay in for the night. It had been a busy week at work for her. His mind was wondering when he got attacked from behind. He started to come to a couple hours later, judging by how much darker it now was. His back was in a lot of pain, and his clothes were bloody and torn. Gingerly he sat up and looked around. This was deeper in the woods than where he had been walking. Slowly he stood up and chose a direction to start walking. It all looked the same; densely populated with trees.

Ezra estimated he had walked for about a mile before he came across a large brick building at the edge of the woods. He crept up to one of the windows and peered inside. It appeared to a bookstore, or a library perhaps. He could make out row upon row of books. He scanned over to the front desk where two men were seated.

Ezra hesitated, then knocked on the door. It was beautifully carved with spirals. A shuffle of feet made their way to the door. It creaked open, and one of the men he had seen looked him over. Ezra noticed his eyes were lilac in color; were they contacts? The man still behind the counter strolled over, and Ezra was struck by his golden eyes. The two men turned to look at each other and whispered something between them. The one with the gold eyes stuck out his hand towards him, and introduced himself as Sol.
