Usakin sniffed the air and flung the dirt off her paws. Usakin could tell by the crisp morning air and the vibrant leaves in the trees that the season was changing. With the change came new growth and a chance to nibble on her favorite snack: pumpkins!

The problem was she had to sneak into Jaxon's prized pumpkin patch every year to get the delectable orange fruit. Not only did she have to keep her eyes and ears alert for the hoards of people swarming the place in search of pumpkins to carve, she also had to keep away from Jaxon's haughty glare.

Usakin patiently hunkered down in her hiding spot behind a bunch of pumpkins. She watched the people walk around in circles looking for fresh pumpkins. A man stopped nearby reading the book, 103 Things To Do With a Pumpkin in one hand, while holding an freshly picked pumpkin in his other hand. Usakin thought the man wanted to enter his pumpkin into a carving contest or else he had some other crazy 102 ideas for his pick. Whom in Subeta needed so many ideas for pumpkins? Usakin was content that all she knew what to do with a pumpkin was eat it.

Darkness fell over the pumpkin patch as Usakin maneuvered silently around the pumpkins and a few straggling people. There in the middle of the patch was a beautiful pumpkin, it's moonlit leaves beckoning Usakin to take a risk. Usakin's ears twitched as she jumped closer to the pumpkin. She carefully leaned closer and grabbed a leaf between her teeth.

"A'hem!" cleared someone's deep voice. Usakin's heart raced as she looked up, the shadows outlining a man's form. "Just what do you think you are doing in my pumpkin patch?", asked the man. Usakin recognized the man as the one carrying the book and pumpkin from earlier and let out a tiny squeak.

Usakin dashed away as fast as her little legs could take her while Jaxon loudly sighed, shaking his head. There would always be another time for Usakin to try for her favorite treat. There would always be another time when no one was looking and there would always be next year.
