Lore of Hell

Not much is known about the origins of the god of Hell, whose true name is irrelevant as he simply takes on the sole title of The Devil. Legends say that The Devil used to be an angel who rose in power to rival the God in Heaven, and sinned and blasphemed until he was cast out as fallen angel. The Devil fell into the fires of the deepest depths of existence, and there he found the staff of Evil; wielding the staff, he was reborn as a god in his new realm. He began to build his newfound heaven which was named Hell, and as true Heaven was a place that the righteous mortals of Earth went to when they died, The Devil made Hell a place for souls who had done wrong.

Chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, benevolence, and humility were the virtues of Heaven, and The Devil possessed all seven opposite qualities: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. His inner greed decided that he would collect souls that were like him, sinful and as rejected from Heaven as he was, and that he would fill his realm with these damned mortal souls. The mortals of Earth were neutral creatures, able to be swayed to either side of morality, and The Devil grew impatient when he found that most did not willingly choose him. In order to fill his realm with damned souls, he would need to cheat - and in his pride he decided that he would be the one to tempt the mortals into sinning and joining him, so he left Hell. For countless years the Devil acted as all seven sins and appeared all over the mortal realm, tricking, tempting, and swaying weak mortals to be condemned into joining him, simultaneously beginning a legend that The Devil could give you talent, fame, fortune, or anything that you wanted in exchange for your mortal soul - your eternal existence contractually signed away for a momentary gain.

Despite this, The Devil's inner sloth soon grew tired of having to do all the work, and envious of Heaven's angels, he created his own twisted version of them, and brought demons into existence. He divided his soul into seven pieces that were split into each sin, and he gave the pieces of his soul to the first seven demons, transforming them into Super demons with the task of being the ones to tempt mortals into each of their sins. He divided Hell into nine realms known as circles that descended into the depths of Hell like a funnel, and like a reverse penthouse, The Devil's personal realm was the deepest point and the ninth circle, with Limbo being the first circle at the top. The remaining seven circles were reserved for punishing souls who committed the seven deadly sins, with each Super demon becoming a prince and manager of each circle as The Devil populated the realms with lower demons that fit the seven personalities, for the purpose of torturing the damned souls. Lastly, he created a class of demons which were lowest of all, small and true servants to him and each of the princes; these were called imps. The Super demon princes would later be known as simply The Sins, and disguised themselves as mortals to roam the Earth and falsely gain trust.

As The Devil grew in power with his demon servants, and was found to be cheating in the influencing of mortals with his Sins, the God in Heaven mirrored The Devil's creations in an attempt to balance the influence of mortals. Seven super angels were created and became known as The Virtues, similarly tasked with visiting Earth and influencing mortals, but into doing good. So began an eternal battle for dominance between the Sins and the Virtues as all the participating creatures received from their gods a monthly quota of souls to damn or save, and neither realm could back down, lest the balance shift in the opposition's favor. Both forces needed each other - without evil, good was meaningless, and without good, evil wouldn't exist.

Although it was located in Hell, Limbo was something of a neutral ground, overseen by the Grim Reaper and the unbiased nature of death. It was the waiting room of the afterlife, full of souls who have yet to be judged and vagrant souls unlucky enough to be completely stuck in the balance of virtue and sin, unable to be cast to neither Heaven nor Hell. But The Devil wasn't completely through with his sneaky and underhanded attempts at being in power. He gave himself the ability to raise the dead, sending unholy spirits back to the mortal world in the form of zombies, and picking from his damned collection in Hell, he naturally owned the souls of those he resurrected. However, his gluttony for more power would lead to his eventual usurpation as he dipped into Limbo, and raised dead souls that he didn't own.

The slow downfall began much earlier, as The Devil discovered that his demons were not the obedient slaves that he intended them to be, and instead had free will, with their evilness resulting in them being naturally unruly and impudent. Even the Sins were not immune to this, as The Devil was dismayed over the centuries to have his princes betray and commit crimes against him. These offenses resulted in The Devil removing his sinful soul piece from the demon, an excruciatingly tortuous process, before obliterating them from existence. Transforming their appearance to that of the original Super demon, the soul piece is bestowed to a new demon, who at first would be such megalomaniacs that they had been chosen to rise above the other demons of their circle, that they were expected to be obedient for years to come.

The Devil never had to replace Pride, the prince of the neighboring circle, who was the most obedient and a total suck-up, and who became The Devil's favorite "child". On the other hand, The Devil struggled the most with maintaining Lust's obedience, whose circle was farthest away. Though very frequently replaced, each new Lust would repeatedly disobey and prioritize its own desires, distracted with mingling with mortals and ignoring efficiency. The Devil's inner wrath arose as he devised an experiment to create a demon who was pushed beyond its limits of sanity and wickedness, through pain and isolation, in order to force it to obey and put an end to the replacing. He took a new demon and converted it into Lust, then waited for it to disobey before imprisoning it inside of a mortal's body, forcing it to live a life not of its own and having no control, unless it tried to possess the mortal, which would cause it pain as form of self-punishment. In the end, the experiment didn't work, and the previous Lust became the only demon known to survive Sin deconversion.
