Hey, there. Want a snack?



I was hatched into a very practical family.

We are Dillema. Sturdy. Sensible. We eat because we must, and we stop when the plate is empty. My relatives believed food was fuel, nothing more. Chew, swallow, move on. A meal was successful if no one was still hungry and nothing caught fire. Ambition ended there.

Then, there was me.

I dreamed of things my family found unnecessary. Flavor. Spice. Crunch. Contrast. A sauce with opinions. A garnish that meant something. I wanted food to be vibrant. I wanted it to tell a story, preferably one with a plot twist and at least one crunchy chapter. I was even willing to risk my great-grandmother’s wooden spoon to fulfill my quest for umami. A noble sacrifice.

My family disapproved. Flavor? Who needs that, they said, while chewing something the color of regret.

It turned out that most of the Dillema in our community agreed. You could find plenty of slop. Reliable slop. Consistent slop. Slop you could set your watch by. I wanted to change our world.

So I left.

I traveled Subeta from top to bottom and side to side. I discovered the flavors of each place, dancing across my mind like bursts of color and wonder. I ate at festivals, stalls, and tables piled high with celebration. Then I went home, and I cooked. Little by little, my family grew brave. I realized they were not stubborn, just cautious of the unknown, and possibly terrified of seasoning.

As for me, I still crave more. Now an acclaimed food critic, there is nowhere that food is a thing that I haven't been to. I taste foods that sparkle, foods that bite back, foods that look suspicious but turn out to be masterpieces. I continue my quest to uncover the hidden magic between salt and heat. My collection of memories and books grows heavier, and so do I.

I will eat street food without shame and fine delicacies without fear. I will praise a perfect snack as loudly as a grand feast. But I will absolutely tell you exactly what I think of it. It's hard to find the perfect morsel, and much easier to find mediocre or even appalling ones. But that doesn't stop me. I will always keep trying more.

There are limits, of course. If it groans, twitches, looks like crap or has ever worn a helmet while attempting to eat someone’s brain, I am not interested. I am adventurous, not reckless, and I refuse to eat anything that looks even slightly disgusting.

Food is not a means to an end. Food is the point. And if you’re willing to share a bite, I promise to find the perfect dish just for you.

Trust me. I’ve tasted worse. And better. Mostly better.
