(Inspired by the Mercedes Lackey series 500 Kingdoms)

Once upon a time, in a far away land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. But then, one rainy, miserable night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold....

Nelix the Godmother put on her Old Beggar Woman costume. She wove appearance charms into a small, easily concealed brooch beneath her beggars clothing., giving herself a big nose, crooked beggar's teeth, and squinty, watery eyes amid a mass of Old Lady Wrinkles. Crafting these charms was complex and difficult. Not enough wrinkles, and she wouldn't look old enough. Too many, and she'd look like a shar pei. She carefully molded a hunched back so she could limp her way along leaning heavily on her wand; disguised as a cane. Finally, she wove waterproofing spells into her cloak so that, while she would look drippy and miserable, she would remain quite dry, no matter how much rain fell.

Using a Transport spell, she whisked away to the shining castle where her test was to be commenced. It was of course, a stormy evening. She knocked on the great door and was greeted by a short and broad majordomo, a fellow that reminded Nelix strongly of a mantle clock, who ushered her inside. The man didn't look surprised to see her; instead, for just a moment, he looked vaguely tired and resigned.

Barking orders to a candlestick-thin maître'd, Nelix was soon presented with a sour faced prince.

"Oh no!" the prince half yelled at the sight of Nelix's costumed figure, "No! Not another one! That's two this bloody week! I'm sick of this! You hear me! Sick and bloody tired of this never-ending parade of beggar women!"

"Of course, Master," the majordomo agreed, in tones of long-suffering tolerance to the prince's rant. "What shall we do with her, sire?"

"Please, your Highness," Nelix quavered, "I ask only for shelter and a bit of leftover food. I don't have much to offer, save this single rose..."

"I. Don't. Want. It." The prince growled furiously, spinning away from her in a manner that was almost... 'frightened' fast. He shot a poisonous glare at the maître'd, "You know what to do with uninvited guests!" His tone was menacing, if not outright threatening. He spun on his heel and stormed off.

"Of course, Monsieur," the words seemed to bounce off the richly coiffed back of the prince. "Please, Madame," the thin man interrupted Nelix preparing to raise her wand, "if you will follow me, I will ensure that you will enjoy a fine meal at the castle's expense."

Nelix froze, gob smacked, not having had the chance to throw off her disguise just yet.

"Fear not, my lady," the chubby majordomo added. "Please join my compatriot in the kitchen, where I believe you will find accommodations quite to your liking."

This was... not something the Godmother had expected... at all. Still bewildered, she soon found herself in a very comfortable, padded chair set next to the kitchen fire. A small table was soon in front of her, complete with a bowl full of hot soup to warm her bones. A gentle stir with a spoon revealed vegetables and meat, all cooked in thick broth. This was no meal of leftover scraps! She was being fed better than any beggar could ever hope for! Confusion swamped her again.

"Madame," the maître'd said kindly, "I hope this is to your liking. We have a simple bed prepared for you, in a room just on the other side of the kitchen hearth. You will sleep warm and dry tonight, and if you wish, can be sent on your way with supplies."

"I... I admit to feeling a little confused," Nelix pitched her voice to a quavering old woman's.

More coming...
