Robbed of a proper childhood, Kaisen was forced to take on a massive amount of responsibility at a very young age. At only fifteen, his parents abandoned their children. Kaisen was left to take care of his younger brother Kolden, only nine years old at the time. The two already lived among the lowest class, but when their mother and father took off the boys were left in an even worse state. Kaisen searched desperately through the broken down shack they lived in for anything that could help sustain their existence. His fears were realized when he finally finished ransacking the house to find absolutely no money left behind. They had always been poor, both parents lacking a real job, but they had one stash the boy knew of. However, the people (Kaisen then refused to refer as them as parents) had left behind nothing for their children. The meager amount of food would probably last less than a week between the two. Taking his place as the big brother figure, Kaisen ate as little as possible, giving the majority of the rations to Kolden. Using this technique, he managed to make the supply last up to two weeks. Faced with a hungry brother who relied on him to survive, Kaisen tried to find a job to support their needs. Some people agreed to hire him and he took the best paying job. However, he only worked a day before realizing it wasn't feasible to leave Kolden by himself. He simply couldn't leave the kid alone. Without a job, days went by with no food on the table. The pain in his stomach worsened and Kolden's mental condition started to decline. Although he had always acted timid and insecure, ever since the unannounced disappearance of their parents he began to fear everything and suffer from hallucinations. He clung to his older brother almost constantly as his only source of comfort, terrified of things only he could see. It was impossible to leave him alone without having a nervous break down; therefore Kaisen had no other choice but to take him along as he searched for some source of income. It was frustrating and at times, the youth lost control, going so far as to lash out at the crying child. This only made things worse, for it would take hours to console Kolden and regain his trust.
Things, however, only progressively deteriorated with the further passage of time. With no other alternative, Kaisen made the decision to sell everything he could in the house to make money. The two remained in the empty shed until their funds were once again depleted; he had nothing left to sell except the roof over their head. And he did, earning enough money to keep them going for quite some time, roaming from place to place. Even though he acquired a good sense of money and haggling skills, they eventually had nothing else to sell and the remaining supply of money ran dry. A year had passed, putting Kaisen at sixteen years. The street life had toughened him, making him a testy and violent individual. He did what he had to for his needy and volatile brother, stealing and dealing in whatever he could to earn a buck for food. For several years this method worked, although not without a great deal of risk and difficulties. Kolden made things harder as he continued to suffer. He spoke nonsense, of people and things that followed him around. Some even told him to do things or threatened him. Kaisen tried to convince him that it was all in his head, but his attempts proved useless. Sitting awake in secluded alley, Kaisen fought back sleep in order to watch over his brother, who was curled up tightly on the filthy pavement next to him. Although the corner was away from the area that attracted the most danger, he couldn't allow himself to sleep not only because of the harm that could befall his brother, but also because the kid was known to suffer from his delusions more frequently at night. This pace had continued for several days, depriving Kaisen of valuable rest. When he could no longer jerk his eyes open and his head up, the teenager finally nodded off. Only what seemed like a few minutes later, a groggy Kaisen awoke to the faintest sound of whimpering. He panicked for a moment, Kolden was no where in sight. Then he spotted a figure hunched over behind a trashcan further down the alley. Although still disoriented, he hurried to the scene as fast as possible, hoping desperately it was Kolden. He arrived just in time to see the figure, indeed his brother, carving up his forearms with a shard of broken glass. Kaisen yelled for him to stop and jerked Kolden's hand away. He turned to give his older brother a blank, distant look and then lunged at him with the makeshift weapon. Not expecting the attack and too exhausted to react quickly, the sharp glass sliced into his forehead above the right eye. Staggering back, Kaisen's face was drenched in blood after only a few seconds. He barely had time to react to the pain, for Kolden was coming toward him again for another attack. Although one eye clenched shut, Kaisen was able to fend off his murderous brother before he could cause any more damage. It wasn't very difficult to wrestle the puny ten year old boy to the ground, even with him thrashing about.
"Stop it Kolden!! Fucking stop!!" Kaisen yelled fiercely as he slammed the boy repeatedly against the concrete. He had finally had enough. After years of living life for the sole purpose to support his brother, giving him everything and taking nothing for himself, this was the only sort of gratitude he received. Only when Kolden dropped the glass and covered his face was Kaisen finally able to restrain himself, but still couldn't stand to look at the boy. Everything would have been so much easier if he didn't have Kolden to worry about. Lacking parents made no difference to him, in fact, he preferred life without them. They had barely managed to keep the two alive when they were around. Even though Kaisen was arguably doing better supporting Kolden than their parents had, he had no interest or care in taking the responsibility any longer.
"Take care of yourself for once." He spat, throwing the pack of rations next to the sobbing child. No guilt struck him as he glanced down at Kolden, in fact for the first time in years, he felt no weight on his mind.
"Big brother.." Kolden whimpered as Kaisen disappeared from sight.
Kaisen kept walking. However, as the distance between them increased, he started finally started to regret leaving Kolden behind. Kaisen couldn't desert him like that, he wouldn't last a day on his own. Though, he was no longer capable of taking care of his brother.. It wasn't only because of the attempt on his life. Although it had been his breaking point, so much more had compiled over the years. Kolden was sick and no matter how hard he tried to care for the boy, Kaisen knew he couldn't. His brother needed serious medical treatment, not just food and protection. Stopping at the closest payphone, he called the police and gave them enough information to locate Kolden. They would find someone who could give him the care he needed.
Years have passed since Kaisen decided to forfeit care of his brother and he now has the life he wanted. Kaisen roams the streets alone and makes a decent living in whatever trade he can (usually mechanical work). He drifts around the city without a permanent place to live, usually boarding in an abandoned house somewhere close to where he's working at the time. However, there isn't always a rundown building to find, in which case Kaisen sleeps on a rooftop accessible by fire escapes. He could probably afford a shabby apartment, but doesn't like being attached to one place. Kaisen still can't manage to visit Kolden. It wasn't hard to figure out where he ended up. After a bit of searching, he located an article in the paper that detailed a case in which the police found young boy, frightened beyond reason. The print said that the kid could give no information that the authorities could work with, meaning they had no family to attach him to. After a psychological evaluation, the boy was immediately placed in the care of a nearby mental institution. It would do no good for either of them for Kaisen to visit his brother, so he stays away despite a nagging concern for Kolden in the back of his mind. Due to his life on the streets, Kaisen has gained a very strong endurance for most things. He can still go days without eating or sleeping and it takes a lot to wear him down. He is a very hard worker and likes to fix things with his hands. Because he has managed to avoid the school system for the later years of his life, Kaisen has little use for books and subjects such as math and English. However, he makes up for it with his street intelligence and general understanding of the shadier dealings of life.
When it comes to other people, Kaisen is patient only to a point, although once he is set off his violent temper is revealed. Once it is invoked, Kaisen has a difficult time settling back down. The few traits he does find endearing in people, though, are honesty and stability. Mostly because of his history of dealing with Kolden, he can't stand being around people who can't handle themselves or who complain excessively. He enjoys time alone, preferably at night in a high place, such as a rooftop. Sometimes you'll catch him gazing out over the city from the highest ledge he can find, although not for too long because he hates to be inactive for extended periods of time. Because of his love for open spaces, it is only nature that he suffers from claustrophobia. He also hates being crowded, for if he feels confined Kaisen will start swinging until he can breathe again. Another prominent facet of Kaisen's personality is his love for adrenaline. He hates responsibility but loves to take risks that involve real danger, like Russian roulette. Not one to back down out of fear, Kaisen has been known to pick fights, even without alcohol in his system. Although he isn't a heavy drinker, he likes an occasion shot or two (without ice of course). Despite commonly being coupled with drinking, Kaisen hates cigarettes and can't stand to have smoke blown in his face. This factor has been the cause of many a bar fight involving the fiery tempered teen. Another pet peeve among his many annoyances, he hates things that are beyond his control, another reason why he had to leave Kolden that night.
