A heavy groan came from the heap of dark clothing as Brash nudged it with her boot. As she expected the resident swordsman was on the floor of his cabin rather than in his bed. By the looks of it he may have actually made it to bed... but didn't stay in it during the night. Her nose gave a slight wrinkle to the smell of alcohol and smoke that clung to him. "Get up; it's almost time for breakfast."
"I'm not hungry... I just want a smoke...” The mass of clothing mumbled before a hand snuck out from under his cloak to feel around Brash's boot and behind her heel where his box of cigarettes was. His fingers shook a bit as he tried to grasp the metal box but Brash pushed it out of the way with her foot and the man only grabbed her boot. Arms folded across the captain's chest as she glared down at him. "Don't look at me like that." He muttered - he knew what she was doing and he didn't even have to see her.

"You don't get another smoke until you've eaten something." She stated, reaching down to pick up the metal box and tuck it into the inside pocket of her vest, patting it to see that it was secure. Reaching down she grabbed at the man's shoulders and rolled him over. The swordsman flashed a slight grin and Brash simply rolled her eyes. "Where were you all night? You're lucky Gentry didn't leave you behind." The swordsman only grumbled and rolled his eyes in response before reaching to dig through his cloak and deposited a roll of paper money in the captain's hand. "What's this?"

"My rent. My support? Whatever." He grunted and it was made clear that Brash was not to ask or mention it beyond this point. "I did pretty well at that card game last night." He stated, finally sitting up and then standing with Brash's help. With the captain whining again about how he smelled the swordsman grunted and agreed to bathe before joining the rest of the crew for their meal. Brash left the man to it and went on to collect their lookout.

Background

Like most of the other members of the crew of the Dreamgear, the one known as Cutlass has noble blood-lines, though he does not recall. He was one of five children, the middle child to two older brothers and twin younger sisters, the children to an eccentric Italian father and a timid and sweet Japanese woman. Cutlass ran away when he was only twelve, unsatisfied with his life in the shadow of his older brothers. He was found along the road by a band of thugs who stole from him the money he had, the clothes off his back and nearly took his life - leaving him for dead in a ditch.

As the story goes, he would not die - rather he was found by a man a short time later and taken to the gentleman's home where he was cared for and brought back to health. He recalled nothing before waking in the man's guest room, he could remember only his name, Carlo, and that he was sure he was dying. He remembered nothing about his family or why he had run away and frankly did not care, if he could not remember then it was not important. The man who Cutlass would refer to only as "Father" raised him as his own for the next four years, teaching and training him. As he was a single man there were not good manners to be taught and Cutlass picked up the nasty drinking, gambling and smoking habits not only from Father but from the man's company.

Along with the basics of reading and writing, Cutlass was also trained how to use the blade, any sort of blade as the man was a skilled blades-man. He was sixteen when he was taken into Father's study where the man would reveal to him the knowledge he'd wanted most desperately to know. What had happened to him, and what had become of the men that had left him for dead. Father had tracked them, and with Cutlass now thoroughly trained, he was sent away to deal with them. The following morning authorities would discovery the wreck of the bandit's camp and every man dead without a trace of who had committed the deed. For years he would carry on in secret these murders and assassin's with Father hiring out such services. He was twenty two when he returned from an assignment to find Father slain and taking his few belongings set off on his own as a hired blade to anyone willing to pay him.

Two more years would pass before he'd sit at a gambling table at a pirate's cove, the cards laid out before him so tempting and seated across from him a shrew of a woman with a smirk on her face. How he'd wanted to slice that smirk right off her as he picked up the cards, grinning slightly at the numbers. He'd lay out the cards that in total counted twenty with a greedy wiggle of his fingers, coaxing the woman to show her own. With that smirk still on her face she laid them out, spreading them with those delicate fingers... "Twenty one... you lose." He had not even the time to draw his blade before she had her pistol positioned between his eyes.

Cutlass would become the fourth member of the crew, following the more recently recruited Gentry that Cutlass immediately pinned as a military man. They were on decent terms when Cutlass was sober, but when he was drunk, Brash was usually the only one to deal with him and her wit and Brashiness has earned her the swordsman's respect and loyalty aboard her ship. Unwittingly he'd be the individual to bring aboard the Dreamgear's lookout only a year later.

While previously unaffectionate with anyone while sober Cutlass has taken an immediate attraction to the doctor who saved his life. While he can't agree with Eli's choice in friends, he has found no other fault in the charming blonde who has given him all the attention he's been craving. Maybe he doesn't need the cigs and booze after all...
