He was the nightmare of nightmares. The most terrific of the terrifying. The one other Monsters would cringe at upon approach. The one who made other Monsters grovel at his feet when they were at their wits end trying to scare their children, and were begging for help. And his help he would give, for a price.
A favour. That was all he asked. One he could request any time, anywhere. Some of the most prominent Monsters in Monster City were indebted to him, although he was very discreet about it. Ruining his client's reputations would be detrimental for both parties.
Maynard stood up from his perch, gesturing at the Monster pleading below him. One head focused on his petitioner, the other was constantly moving, watching their surroundings for any attack that might come.
“I will grant your request, little monster,” said the first head. “In return, you will allow me to call on you whenever I need, no questions asked.”
The Monster in question, trembling, nodded at him, although he was having trouble deciding which head he should be looking at. Maynard’s second head swung around and snarled at the little Monster, then immediately swung away, always watching for threats.
Maynard had done his job, and done it well. He was already one of the more terrifying Monsters in the City, but mixed with the night and just the right amount of mood lighting, he could horrify even the bravest of children. Crawling on the ceiling, some hissing and snarling from his second head, and he had his prey screaming for their parents in a matter of moments.
And now, now another Monster owed him. One of the same Monsters that had cast him out all those years ago, cast him out for being too scary. Well, one day he would cash in those carefully accumulated favours. He would make his way to the top of the Monster City, and, once that happened, he could begin in earnest the hunt for the demon who was always watching him.
Maynard grunted contentedly at the thought. While he meandered down the streets of the Neutral Zone, his second head was continually swinging, round and round, searching the shadows for the creature that haunted them.
