Ponder had always been called a daydreamer. And he was, he admitted, but he sometimes also played up this aspect of his personality. He liked to cover up the fact that he was actually a very shrewd businessman.
He had learned long ago how to capture his daydreams. He could reach into his mind and grab a shard of his daydream, then bottle it. He didn’t know how he did it, but since it worked, he might as well profit from it.
He had never been a very good Monster-Under-the-Bed, he hadn’t had the focus to be frightening. He also often found himself too distracted to remember his appointments. He had been stripped of his title very early on (and really, he was surprised he’d passed the exams in the first place), and had found a home in the Neutral Zone of Monster City.
At first, he had despaired and had turned in on himself. His imagination had sustained him. He had been destitute, living on scraps in a pile of blankets he’d scrounged up for himself.
And then, at the lowest of low points, out of sheer despair and a need for company, he had extracted his first dream shard. It had been a little pink bunny. His shock had pulled him out of his stupor. He’d realized how he had been living and had vowed to clean himself up.
And he had. After much trial and error, he had perfected his technique of removing and bottling shards. He set up a stall in the market of the Neutral Zone- and while the legality of the market was somewhat dubious, it was often frequented by both Monsters-Under-the-Bed and Monsters-in-the-Closet. His product was a novel one, and the Monsters had a rabid appetite for the shards.
Most of the daydreams he produced were scary ones. The Monsters, after purchasing them, could release them onto their victim. Once the child was settled into the daydream, the Monster then had time to take a break instead of spending the time shaking the bed or groaning or whatever it was the Monsters did.
HQ didn’t like it. Nor did they like him. But as neither had jurisdiction in the Neutral Zone, he was able to continue business as usual and leave them scratching their heads as they tried to find a way to shut him down.
