I sit alone in a quiet room, my body fairly still and my thoughts sluggish. The air is still, but my ears are filled with the inescapable droning of white noise and the soft ticks of clock hands as they methodically measure the passing seconds. I shift halfheartedly and turn my head slightly in order to glance at the timepiece on the wall, straining my gaze as to not move any more than necessary. The clock itself seems unfamiliar in all applicable respects, its muted blue plastic shell, blocky numerals, and the stiff movements of its second hand offering me no recollection of its origins.

Be that as it may, I feel unperturbed and artificially placid, silently acknowledging how uncharacteristically lackluster and hazy my mind and senses have felt as of late. That's not to say I was previously an exceptionally spirited person, only that, as of late, I've felt as if actions as simple as gently breathing had become laborious manual tasks. My mind seems to suffer worst of all, my memories feeling contiguous to overexposed photographs that have been decorated with elaborately singed holes. I defeatedly reason with myself that I have likely had the clock in question for some time now and simply forgotten, an understandable mistake to make given my current state. This is just before I come to realize that every 12 seconds or so the second hand on the clock tends to stick, jolting and ticking softly in place for several seconds before it manages to break free and continue its journey around the face. I weakly but tightly close my eyes, my discovery that the device is almost certainly inaccurate coming as no surprise.
