profile
I pen this while laying in the mud covered by soiled sheets the color of dung that flutter in the harsh mountain breeze. The stench of death surrounds us, as do the bot flies, and scavenging birds. My hope is someone shall read this, someone to think twice about waging a war for no other reason then greed. I know my hope is of a faint fantasy, but that hope is all I have left.
Peace.
It's something I have long forgotten what it feels likes, looks like.
This war that has raged on for far too long.
The generation after I, has only heard stories about peace.
There are far fewer of the generations after that. Too few in fact, it's been a decade since the last baby cried.
They are the ones born into the war. Fodder for the cavalry and dagger alike.
Ravaged by the land. The starvation. The disease. Taken far too soon.
It's for the best unfortunately.
There is little hope for a future until we create peace.
Peace doesn't come during, it comes after the war.
After the war.
To hope for the end.
The castle is on fire yet again.
The screaming of agony alight from within, as much as the fire alights the night.
There is no water left to douse the flames, few rush in to save those trapped.
We all know better, we'll be burned and be just as dead, - let the fire take them. It's a small mercy than be left burned alive wrought in agony and no healer to aid with herbs.
And still we fight, in hope to protect what was once ours.
In reality, we are surrounded and have no where left to run.
We will not go down without a fight.
We will not go down alone.
We're taking as many as we can with us.
The pounding of hooves, I can hear storming up the stone roadway. They are heavy, laden with armored soldiers.
This may be our last stand.
I hope I survive long enough to see this letter read.
if not, rest assured
I wasn't in any pain.
Listen people to a story
That was written long ago,
'bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley folks below.
On the mountain was a treasure
Hidden deep beneath a stone,
And the valley people swore
They'd have it for their very own.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing,
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came the answer from the kingdom,
With our brothers we will share,
All the riches of the mountain,
All the treasure buried there.
Now the valley cried with anger,
Mount your horses, draw your swords
And they killed the mountain people,
So they won their just rewards
Now they stood before the treasure
On the mountain dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it
Peace on earth, was all it said.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat and friend,
Do it in the name of heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after
One tin soldier rides away.
