Profile

Ravik has always been too curious for their own good, especially when it comes to anything strange and unusual. That curiosity, combined with an affinity for magic, led them to chase tales they'd heard of an unknown entity with godlike power, with their adventuring partner at their side; and instead of limiting themselves to research that often felt impossible, they both decided to dive in headfirst and form binding pacts with the entity.

While Ravik's changes were only physical, their partner Belazar became corrupt with power. With time, he abandoned his already-loose moral code; and, in turn, Ravik abandoned him. It is their only regret regarding the pact that they made, but a deep one that they can't bear thinking about.

Overall, Ravik is a happy-go-lucky person, completely comfortable with the oddities of their changed body, and their interest in unusual magic is stronger than ever. They love the additional abilities granted to them by their patron and its chaotic magic, and have only grown more invested in learning more about the otherworldly entity and its role in the universe. Yet underneath that cheerful persona is quiet, buried guilt for what happened with their former partner... and crushing anxiety over what may happen between them in the future.

Relationships

former partner

Belazar was Ravik's adventuring partner and best friend for a number of years. The two lived and traveled together, becoming extremely close; Ravik honestly thought they'd be in each others' lives forever, and there were times that they felt the relationship bordered on more than simple friendship. (They were never sure if they were reading into things or not, though, and now they can only look back and wonder what it all meant.)

When Belazar joined Ravik in becoming warlocks of Ifren, they initially thought nothing of it, but as time went on, he began to change. He began to view himself -- and Ravik -- as having 'evolved' past being mere ordinary people; he spoke of drawing more people into Ifren's influence, to gain more power; and the final straw for Ravik was when they discovered that he'd come to view humanoids as not just inferior, but lower on the food chain. Unable to bring themself to directly confront someone that they'd once trusted but now felt they no longer knew, Ravik could only write a short message and disappear from Belazar's life, an unceremonious end to all their time together.

In hindsight, they regret the way they handled things and that they didn't push harder to make Belazar see reason. They think often of revisiting their former partner, for closure if nothing else, but their uncertainty over just how much he may have changed has kept them from it. It's cowardly and a constant reminder that they're no hero, but Ravik prefers to remain willfully ignorant. If nothing changes, their relationship will never end in bloodshed, and they can continue to believe in the potential for peace and redemption in the future.

Patron

Ifren,
the many-eyed beast from beyond the stars, the lord of the outer realms, the riftborn god.

Nothing fascinated Ravik more than the whispers they'd heard of a being so otherworldly that it exists beyond even the reach of the goddess of the moon and stars. The rumors surrounding it are vast: a fallen god, a deity from an undiscovered plane, a being of monstrous power seeking to gain enough influence to ascend to godhood -- no one is quite certain of anything but its name, Ifren.

In retrospect, Ravik understands that forming a pact with such an enigmatic entity was foolish. Since the day that their pact was created, Ravik can't say that they've learned very much more about Ifren. Ifren isn't one for direct communication; more often than not, Ravik will only get a sensation of what Ifren wants from them. Occasionally they will get the sensation of a word or two in their mind, always in an unknowable language that Ravik dearly wishes they could find out enough about to research.

They long to learn more about their patron; not just for the sake of the insatiable curiosity that led them to Ifren, but because of their recurring uncertainties. They don't think that the being itself is evil, even as disturbing as the physical changes can be, and the pact has done nothing but good for them. Nothing that Ifren has asked of them has been out of the bounds of what they'd expect, nothing about the new magic granted to Ravik seems innately evil, and certainly they've never felt pushed toward evil.

Still, they can't help but wonder if Ifren had something to do with the way Belazar changed. For years, they'd known him to be imperfect but charming and attentive, willing to help people out when the opportunity presented itself. He'd been good to them; even right before Ravik left, he'd still made it so clear that he cared for them. And as much of a smooth talker as Belazar could be, he couldn't always articulate why he'd done some of the things he'd done... things that he would never have done prior to Ifren changing them both.

Could it be that Ifren -- an unknown, incredibly powerful maybe-deity that refuses to directly communicate and causes strange, sinister changes in physiology -- turned Belazar into a monster not just physically but mentally, while something about Ravik, who was so much more experienced with magic, kept their mind from being similarly influenced? Was Ravik's curiosity the reason their partner became an unrecognizable threat? Or was he always like that, deep down, and Ifren (and Ravik) only helped him unleash his monstrous potential?

As desperate as Ravik is for more answers, they aren't sure if they want to know everything.

(Side note: while Ravik's profile and design lean very heavily into the Subeta riftborn aesthetic, they and the other characters in their group are equally inspired by the Far Realm in D&D. I was a player in an almost 6-year-long campaign whose overarching plot involved an extremely powerful entity from the Far Realm that was on its way to godhood. Wanting to get a few riftborn pets here gave me a great excuse to draw inspiration from that memorable campaign and kinda combine two of my favorite things!)
