Details of Starship USS-Explorer log book

9:36:06- Unidentified life form located. Distance: unknown.

''Captain!'' The lieutenant broke the command room silence. It was getting late, and the Gamma shift would start in exactly 24 minutes. The main commanding team shift was about to finally end. Everyone was drained after the afternoon's turbulences, the small asteroid belt they went through having been particularly hard on the ship this time. The team had to undergo a double shift. A few dark matter measurement instruments broke, leaving the ship too vulnerable to attacks for the main team not to be on bridge. However, they were now in a mostly blank area of space and still within the confederation boundaries. An attack was very unlikely.

''Yes lieutenant Ackles?'' The tiredness in the captain's voice was blatant. The lieutenant better had something important to say.

''It seems we have detected an unknown ... Life form. It is possible the detector is giving me a wrong reading, it was pretty damaged by today's turbulences. We are supposed to be in blank space. The readings aren't too clear I ...''

9:36:35- Motor failure in sector 6

''Captain!'' The voice of the chief engineer echoed through the command room, stopping Lt. Ackles in mid-sentence. "One of the motor in sector 6 stopped working! I am not too sure what is wrong it seemed to work just fine about 10 minutes ago, but ..."

Light across the command room started flickering violently for several seconds. The voice of the engineer was cut short by darkness. ''Miss Syrik, what is going on?'' The captain's voice pleaded his first officer for explanations. They have had enough for today.

9:36:52- General power failure. Auxiliary power supplies activated.

The dim glow of the command room various screens and buttons lighted the room. It took several seconds for Sarik to reply. He looked through his science station one more time before finally speaking. She weighted his every words and spoke in a logical and calculated manner true to her species. ''It would seem captain, that the unknown life form detected earlier is causing our ship's equipment to malfunction. The life form generates and high amount of dark matter that clog our system. It is useless to mention that there is no such thing as a documented life form producing dark matter which probably means that our sensors malfunctioned. There is a 87.56% change of the dark matter being caused by an enemy ship and a 10.45% change of it being an alien device. I would advice to....''

9:37:15- Unidentified life form located. Distance: 10 meters.

''Commander...'' The voice of Lieutenant Ackles was hesitant. He had been trying to interrupt the first officer for several seconds. He knew he wasn't supposed to cut short his commanding officer like that. However the information he was seeing on the screen was of vital importance. His mental struggle between duty and logic finally ended when his survival instinct decided it would be best to talk now. The commander was wrong. He could clearly see it on his navigation screen: there was a creature, about 2 times the size of the ship, right in front of them.

Syrik stopped and raised a characteristic eyebrow. She was about to state regulation about how the lieutenant shouldn't have interrupted his commanding officer in the middle of an important discussion with the captain, but he didn't have time to do so. An alarming red light started flashing over the main commanding board.

9:37:28- High level of dark matter detected.

''What does this mean? Why aren't our shields blocking this?'' The captain shouted. No one understood. Nothing made sense.

''Our shields are down sir. Power supply to the main defence system is down. I can't seem to reach engineer to ask them why the power hasn't been restored yet. Our communication system seems down too ... I do not understand what is going on sir.'' The captain looked to his communication officer. She had been working to restore communication with engineer for several minutes, in vain.

''Captain.'' His first officer was by his side. Her voice was calm. Too calm. ''It would seem the ship is shutting itself down. If my calculations are correct, in exactly 1.89 minutes, the ship will have completely shut down and there will be no way to escape.''

''How is this possible? Why is this happening? It's completely illogical!'' The captain locked eyes with his first officer. And what he saw in the eyes of the woman convinced him of the worst: fear. Pure fear. They all felt it. It was everywhere. It was grabbing them, holding them in place. Fear. This what was happening. Fear. Something, living or not, was causing them to behave like frightened animals.

''Abandon ship. Now.'' It was the only way. The captain couldn't command his ship anymore. He had lost every sense of reason, of logic. All that was left was that gut felling of survival at any cost.

''Lieutenant Jamin, send a distress signal to satellite 5. Ask for immediate assistance.''

The captain stood up and looked at his crew. With one last bit of courage, he spoke: ''Whatever happens, it was an honor to have you as my crew. You are everything a captain could hope for and below.'' He took a deep breath. ''Now get the hell out of here before it's too late''

9:37:59- Emergency procedure 79 activated. All crew abandon ship.

But it was already too late for survival.

9:38:16- Connection with satellite 5 has been lost.

''Captain.'' Everyone was trying to leave. But they knew. They knew it was too late. Fear was gone. It was acceptance of the inevitable that was now washing over the voice of the Communication officer.

''I can't reach satellite 5. I can't send any signals. All our sensors are blocked. I can't even broadcast anything shipwide. All I hear is silence.''

''Captain'' His first officer spoke. Peace and acceptance could be noted in her serene voice. It was the end. ''Something broke into our system. It spread like a virus. I fear that it already infected the BIOS of the ship computer. We can not leave this room. The doors will not open.''

The captain smiled. His only reassurance was that they would all face this last challenge together. He would not die alone.

9:38:56- Emergency procure 1 activated. Auto destruction in 1 minute.

The electronic voice of the ship computer announced the inevitable fate shipwide.

The light shut down. Red numbers appeared on all screens, breaking the darkness. 59...58...57...

The last thing they saw were red numbers counting down to their death. The last thing they heard was a deep growl over the sound of their captain voice.

''Farewell my friends. Meet you all at your stations on the other side for another adventure. I'm counting on you. Don't disappoint me.''

9:39:56- Farewell

A blast of bright orange light broke the darkness of space. And in the end, all that was left, was dust and two glowing eyes.
High security folder: The beast

Simeis, also known as the Darkness or The Beast, is believe to be a gigantic creature roaming deep space. It is said that it has the abilities to create a great amount of dark matter, something which no living creature has ever being proved capable of, and infect electrical devices. Any ship crossing path with Simeis is rumored to be immediately terminated by the beast.

Space pirates consider it the modern equivalent of the mythical Kraken legend and stories of supposed encounter with the Beast are regularly heard in rogue space stations. None of these stories have enough confimed facts to be judged true or plausible by the federation.

All federation reported encounter with Simeis can be explained by other factors, including warp core malfunction or rogue computer viruses.

Simeis is currently considered a mere legend used by space pirates to scare off federation spacecraft from entering certain territories. The recent USS-explorer incident was caused by a malfunction in the ship computer BIOS which lead to the autodestruction procedure to be activated.
